He would go on to play in all 82 games while consistently playing well north of 20 minutes per games as a 19 year old. Miro would go on to finish fourth in Calder voting that season behind eventual Calder Memorial winner Elias Petterson, 2019 Stanley Cup winner Jordon Binnington, and 2018 first overall pick Rasmus Dahlin. In 150 career NHL games, Heiskanen as amassed 20 goals and 68 points in 150 regular season games played and will be a stalwart on the Dallas blue line for many years to come. Out of the top five players selected in this draft, Makar was the only one who played NCAA where he tallied 21 goals and 70 points in 75 games played for the University of Massachusetts.
Makar also led his team in scoring as a defenseman in 2018-19 and would go on to win the Hobey Baker award, the first in the history for the school.
He was viewed by most as a mid second-rounder. Joseph was viewed as a safe, dependable defender with limited upside on draft day and it would be shocking to see him even reach that level at this point. He played three seasons at the University of Denver and signed with Chicago this spring. He has a chance to make an immediate impact in The Windy City.
His NHL debut should come in 2020-21. I like Poehling as a depth option but the lack of offense he generates really limits his overall ceiling. He can help on the power play and kill penalties. He reminds me of Anthony Cirelli. He might be a regular in Boston as soon as next season.
He saw his stock dip over the course of two seasons at the University of Michigan only to explode 31 goals, 61 points in 56 games in his first AHL season. He should be in Ottawa full time this fall.

Injuries have slowed his production on the ice, as the 2021-22 season was the first time he managed to surpass his rookie scoring by playing 70 games and posting 60 points. Hischier is far from a bust, however. The offensively gifted forward was scoring at a torrid pace in the Western Hockey League WHL , and he had the size and total toolkit that general managers dream of when making a top selection. However, that can be expected from a teenager playing against men, so the future still looked bright. In 2019 he was diagnosed with a non-hockey-related migraine disorder , which kept him out of hockey for more than 17 months. While he was expected to work his way back into a role for Philadelphia, the team decided to move on from him in the 2021 offseason, where they traded him to the Golden Knights. Now, Patrick finds himself in a tough position. While he has one-year remaining on the contract extension he signed with Vegas , the Golden Knights are looking to pinch every penny they can to be cap compliant once again. This could lead him to traded if he starts the 2022-23 season slowly, which may hurt his opportunities to excel alongside a playoff-caliber team. Miro Heiskanen — Dallas Stars With the third-overall pick, the Dallas Stars decided to take the first defenseman off the board by selecting Finnish prospect Miro Heiskanen. By taking on more the 23 minutes of ice-time each night as a rookie, he was a top candidate for the Calder Trophy despite lacking in scoring that often drives conversation surrounding that award. He consistently eats 23 to 25 minutes of ice-time each night, puts up needed points, and just acts as a stalwart on the blue line that every team dreams of. Given everything, this was a great selection by Dallas, as they have one of the top young defensemen locked down to a reasonable deal through his prime years. Cale Makar — Colorado Avalanche To say that the 2016-17 season was an unmitigated disaster for the Colorado Avalanche would be a bit of an understatement. To start things off, then head coach Patrick Roy stepped down as head coach before the season even began, leaving the team little time to scramble and find a new skipper. But the Senators were awful this season and that makes evaluating most of their players — particularly the youngest ones — difficult. In Brannstrom, I see a zone exit and entry machine, a superb passer, enviable poise with the puck and just enough talent with his feet and stick to hold his own defensively. And though he became an immediate impact forward at the AHL level, he never really dictated play there as much as he should have given his skill set. His game is built for it. When he gets touches, he makes things happen. The Oilers need more players like him in their supporting cast, not less. I think both of those things can be true, even if I have to acknowledge the bias I have from being lower on Chytil than most over the years. He can skate. He plays hard and fast.
You expect a 6-foot-6 defenceman to have a hard shot and to impose himself physically. In a worst-case scenario, he becomes a useful third-pairing defenceman who can contribute at both ends. In the best-case scenario, he might challenge for the top 10. The potential reward has always outweighed the risk with Hague. Always have. Always will. Did I have a little too much appreciation for it in 2017? Hopefully the injury troubles are behind him and the Flames are happy with this pick twice.
Was he a first-round pick? Does he still have a chance to be an impact top-six player and dynamic power play option? But there were — and are — warts in his game. He lands at No. He can, however, play at the top of the roster with more talented players which is a skill and help out on the power play. Advertisement 19. I would argue Texier has the higher ceiling while Bemstrom has the lower floor. Given the way I normally evaluate players, Texier should probably be ahead of Bemstrom for that reason.
I do think Bemstrom has shown more consistency at the pro level, though, so that gave him a very slight edge. Texier is definitely a better passer, skater and carrier so it will be interesting to see if he can put it all together in the next couple of years or if he settles as a fine middle-six forward rather than an impact one. I really liked him in 2017 and I really like him now.
Given the way I normally evaluate players, Texier should probably be ahead of Bemstrom for that reason.
I do think Bemstrom has shown more consistency at the pro level, though, so that gave him a very slight edge. Texier is definitely a better passer, skater and carrier so it will be interesting to see if he can put it all together in the next couple of years or if he settles as a fine middle-six forward rather than an impact one. I really liked him in 2017 and I really like him now. But my concern with projecting him going forward is also the same now as it was then.
By having him so high, there was a ripple effect on the rest of my board near the top. Yes, I do. Was he rushed through college and into the pro level too quickly? Yes, he was.
Yes, there were. I was impressed by his hands in traffic and his ability to turn nothing into something. And I was prepared to overlook concerns of tempo and athleticism. This is one of my bigger misses ever.
But he has handled it extremely well. The offensive tools are always going to be there. His defensive game and strength, particularly after all of the time he missed, took a little longer to adjust to the AHL. But he really began to hit his stride in the back half of this season, with 11 points in his last 13 AHL games.
He may struggle to reach his ceiling on an Avalanche team that already has Makar and Samuel Girard as offensive options on the blue line, with Bowen Byram on the way, but I still think he has the other tools he needs to be a regular contributor on a contending team. I was a big fan in his draft year, even as he battled mono and things got away from him a little. And while his defensive game and decision making once his biggest weaknesses have become strengths since then, I have grown increasingly concerned with his skating. It could limit his obvious upside as a result.
Advertisement 26. Despite being big, he plays a small ish game. He plays at his own pace, he plays with finesse and touch and he makes plays. I fully expect him to become an impact option in the middle-six for the Stars at even strength while helping out on one of the power-play units.
I was surprised when he fell to the fifth round in 2017 and I think that has proven to be true ever since. So when he became one of the best players in college hockey as a sophomore, he was really more like a junior or senior. When he plays hard and fast and disciplined with and without the puck , he can be a menacing, impactful shift-to-shift player.

I went back and forth on Necas and Robert Thomas at No. I lean toward Necas today because I think his skill level grades out a little higher, even if his floor is still lower compared to Thomas. Thomas is the more complete player off the puck but Necas will win out long term with slightly more dynamic playmaking talent and a clear edge as a shot creator and puck carrier. Louis My final ranking: No. Thomas is a well-rounded, versatile player who can make things happen in all three zones and does a great job identifying his linemates and getting the puck to them through traffic and into space. Was I too high on him at the time? I still think he becomes a 60-plus point centre who offers size, high-end spatial awareness and reliability that teams covet in a top-six forward.
