We were surprised to see that the specified weight of the base was a mere 57 lbs.
Most electric stand up desks have heavy-duty bases that weigh between 70 and 100 lbs. The lighter weight could be a consequence of the lighter-duty motors used in the Bekant, or that the steel used in the base frame is of a thinner gauge than other, more rigid desk bases, or both. Either way, we have our misgivings.

That did not solve the issue. I tried to do this few times but nothing. I tried disconnecting and re-connecting the cables but it did not help. I did some measurements try to find what is wrong.
The table base has a mains power supply looks quite much like laptop power supply that is supposed to output 35V DC at few amperes to power the motors that move the table. I measured the output voltage and the transformer was putting out slightly less than 24V DC. This is not right.
The encoder value in 0x08 always seems to be higher than 0x09. Unclear if this is by design or coincidence. The encoder value in 0x12 seems to be a copy of the value in 0x08 or 0x09 most of the time, but I have occasionally seen other values. I think the encoder value is a target encoder value for one or both legs, and the command byte somehow releases a brake in each leg and commands it to move. Sending 0x87 for a prolonged period of time causes the encoder values in 0x08 and 0x09 to reach the same values. Maybe this is an absolute positioning command?
