Nicknamed the " ", this suave and sophisticated man has been linked to more than 20 murders. It became the title of a hit series made by the BBC and Netflix which is inspired by his life. He was eventually recaptured in the Indian state of Goa. Released in 1997, he retired to Paris but resurfaced in 2003 in Nepal, where he was spotted in the tourist district of Kathmandu and arrested. The following year, a court sentenced him to life in prison for the 1975 murder of American tourist Connie Jo Bronzich.
Nadine Gires, a Frenchwoman who lived in the same building as Charles Sobhraj in Bangkok, told AFP last year that she initially found him to be a " cultured " and impressive character.
Sobhraj spent 20 years behind bars in India for attempting to poison and rob a group of French students in 1977. He reportedly escaped from prison numerous times. Upon his 1997 release, Sobhraj began living a life of luxury in Paris. But in 2003, he was spotted at a casino in Nepal.
Like many of his victims, Bintanja and Hemker were poisoned and brought back to health by Sobhraj in order to gain their trust and loyalty. But once he was done with the couple, they were murdered, found strangled and burnt in December 1975. Following his escape from prison in 1986, Sobhraj was re-arrested in Goa and sentenced to a further 10 years in prison, meaning by the time of his release in 1997, most of his arrest warrants had expired.
