Eugene V. Debs was a US politician and a member of the Socialist Party and ran for President five times since 1900. In 1920, Socialist Eugene V. Debs ran for the Oval Office from the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, where he was known as "prisoner 9653," according to Smithsonian Magazine. This day in 1919, Socialist leader Eugene V Debs is sent to prison for violating the Espionage Act in his opposition to WWI. Marguerite Bettrich and Jean Daniel Debs, two immigrants from Alsace, France, welcomed Eugene Victor Debs into the world on November 5, 1855 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Add to that the uniformly hostile media coverage, and Trump’s prospects of acquittal seem as dim as those faced by Debs in the wartime atmosphere of 1918.
The Untold Truth Of Eugene V. Debs
The speech concluded without incident; Debs continued on to the state convention, and the audience dispersed and returned to their homes. Two weeks later, in Cleveland, Eugene Debs was arrested by U. I admit it. Gentlemen, I abhor war. United States, 249 U. Debs was convicted of violating the Espionage Act and sentenced to ten years in federal prison. He appealed the conviction to the Supreme Court of the United States, which heard arguments in 1919. Even though Debs did not directly instruct his audience to oppose the draft or obstruct recruitment into the military, the Court concluded that his expressions of sympathy and solidarity for those convicted of doing so amounted to obstruction because his audience could have inferred that they should engage in illegal activity from the tone of his speech. The next year, the Socialist Party of America nominated Eugene Debs as their candidate for president for the fourth time.
After some deliberation, Debs accepted. The Election of 1920 Campaigning for president from a prison cell presented a number of challenges, notably that Debs, being confined to prison, could not go out and campaign. He was permitted to send out one statement on political issues [14] Eugene V. From there, his wife Kate mailed the letter to the Socialist Party headquarters in Chicago, where it was typeset and distributed to friendly newspapers and party publications. The process was less than ideal. In many ways, the election of 1920 was a foregone conclusion. Debs did not expect to win, and was more interested in organizing labor unions than electoral politics. For Eugene Debs, the election was a means to an end; for the Socialist Party of America, Eugene Debs was their last hope for a candidate who could unify a socialist labor movement that was becoming increasingly fractured.
Shortly thereafter he became a locomotive fireman. In his capacity as a union leader, Debs worked tirelessly to organize the firemen, but soon came to realize that the other railroad crafts must also be organized in order for the firemen to have any real power. Thus, he then assisted in the organizing of the brakemen, switchmen, carmen and telegraphers among other crafts, into their respective craft unions.
Not long after, Debs resigned his position as Secretary-Treasurer of the BLF despite the mass objection of the firemen rank and file. After years of first hand experience with the failures of the old craft unionism, Debs was now firmly convinced of the need for this new advanced form of union — the industrial union — where all workers in the industry would be organized as a whole, as opposed to separated — and hence ineffectual — under the old outmoded craft union structure. The American Railway Union generated wide interest and support among the rail workers of North America.
Rails were signing up at the rate of 2,000 a week, and within six months the new organization had 150,000 members!

Cox , governor of Ohio, for the Democrats. Yet Debs did not let incarceration keep his message from the voters. In 1920, broadcast radio was not a factor in electioneering, but another electronic medium was just beginning to be exploited for political messaging. On May 29, 1920, in a carefully choreographed event, newsreel cameras filmed a delegation from the Socialist Party arriving at the Atlanta penitentiary to inform Debs officially of his nomination. The New York Times was aghast that a felon might canvass for votes from the motion picture screen. Public opinion turns On Nov. Debs was a distant third, but he had won 3.

On July 2, 1894, federal judges in Chicago issued an injunction prohibiting Debs and the strikers from interfering with the regular transmittal of mail via the railroad. As the strike spread and the injunction failed to halt the strikers, Pullman and other railroad owners called on President Grover Cleveland for support. The President sent in Regular Army troops to quell the violence and subdue the strikers. Convicted of violating the injunction, Debs was sentenced to six months in jail.
While serving his prison term, Debs reexamined his political philosophy and declared himself a socialist. By the time Debs was released from prison in November 1895, he had become a nationally recognized celebrity and political force. The socio-political beliefs that had attracted Debs and the other members to establish the defunct ARU now gathered to form the new Socialist Party with Eugene Debs as its head. Now a Celebrity, Debs Seeks Presidency Even while Debs immersed himself in socialist politics, he still sought the formation of a labor union that encompassed his goals of inclusivity for all workers.

Debs decided to support the strike, as thousands of rail workers across the country staged walk-outs in process. In response, the federal government ordered a military crackdown in July, on the rationale that strikers had disrupted US Mail services distributed via Pullman cars. By the end of the strike on July 20, thirty workers had been killed. While in prison, Debs would recieve letters and reading material via mail from across the country. At the time of his sentencing, he still did not consider himself a socialist, but after reading material written by socialist authors such as Edward Bellamy and Karl Kautsky, he began to learn more and gradually converted to socialism. He was even visited in prison in person by Victor L.
Berger , who gave him a copy of Capital by Karl Marx. After being released from prison, Eugene Debs would begin his new career of involvement in explicitly socialist organizations.
The American Railway Union generated wide interest and support among the rail workers of North America. Rails were signing up at the rate of 2,000 a week, and within six months the new organization had 150,000 members!
ARU members from all crafts struck and the Great Northern was paralyzed. In less than three weeks time, the union had emerged victorious, winning nearly all of its demands. The power of industrial unionism had been demonstrated! The carriers — and corporate America as a whole -- were determined to smash the ARU because it presented a formidable opponent, a valuable example of what can be achieved when workers organize along industrial lines.
Around the turn of the century, together with other labor and populist political leaders, he founded the Socialist Party of America.
The Sedition Act of 1918, which was repealed in 1920, sought to make anti-war statements treasonous. He also criticized the government for detaining anti-war activists, as per The Washington Post. He was arrested weeks later, and many American newspapers at the time dubbed the socialist a traitor or a dictator. During his trial, Debs said he believes "in free speech, in war as well as in peace. While in prison, Debs launched his "from the jail house to the White House" campaign in 1920 after previously running for president in 1904, 1908 and 1912 as the Socialist Party of America nominee. Legal experts are expecting a trial in the Stormy Daniels case to come at a minimum of over a year away or even after the 2024 presidential campaign. Ex-president Donald Trump has been indicted for the second time this year.
