He also has a lightning quick release on his wrist shot. Tolvanen has the soft hands to make quick moves and beat defenders with his stick handling ability. He can bury rebounds and has the hand-eye coordination to get deflections in front of the net as well. He also has plenty of experience playing for the National team at the Ivan Hlinka tournament, the U18, and the U17 levels.
Hischier is a playmaker, with outstanding vision and passing ability. He has very good hockey sense, and anticipates his teammates movements in the offensive zone. Hischier has a very quick first step, excellent acceleration and agility, as well as great edgework. This, along with quick hands, allow him to avoid defenders and make him very elusive when working the puck in the offensive zone.
Hischier also has a very high work ethic, he never seems to stop working during a shift. The answer is Callan Foote. Foote scored eight goals and 36 points in 71 games as a WHL rookie, showing real offensive prowess. Foote is an excellent skater.
He skates well in both directions, and solid pivots and edgework allow him to cover a lot of ice. Its more about battling in the corners and clearing the front of the net than throwing big open-ice hits though. Foote has a hard slap shot which he keeps low and puts on net. He also has good poise with the puck on his stick, and the vision to quarterback things from the point on the power play.
He topped that in his second year, putting up 19 goals and 71 points in just 57 games. The 71 points led the Chiefs in Scoring. He scored seven goals and 13 points in just seven games in the tournament. A late birthday, he is not eligible until the 2017 draft, when he will have just completed his third year in the WHL.
Yamamoto has tremendous hands, he is a great stickhandler and can bury goals in tight to the goalie. He also is very quick to loose pucks with great acceleration and a really quick first step. More a play maker than a goal scorer, he uses his quickness and stickhandling to open up passing lanes. Yamamoto can feather passes tape-to-tape to his linemates and has outstanding vision.
He also put up 15 goals and 34 points in 37 games playing in the under 20 SuperElite league. A versatile player, Vesalainen has experience playing both wings. He has excellent size, and uses it to protect the puck along the boards and extend plays in the cycle. Gifted with a large wing-span, Vesalainen takes advantage of it to play keep-away with defenders.
A budding power forward, Vesalainen wins battles along the boards, and is not afraid to fight through checks to get to the front of the net.

This season for Colorado, Makar was arguably the top candidate for the Calder Memorial Trophy, having racked up 12 goals and 50 points in just 57 games played. Makar was essentially a human highlight reel in 2019-20. With the fifth pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, the Vancouver Canucks were fortunate enough to be able to draft arguably the best of the top 5 in Elias Pettersson. While playing a season for Vaxjo HC of the SHL, Petterson lead the league in scoring with 56 points in just 44 games played among men as a 19 year old.

Cody Glass of the Portland Winterhawks Cody Glass of the Portland Winterhawks was another big riser, moving up from 24th - in the preliminary ranking - to grab the No. A cerebral two-way pivot with good size and skill, the Winnipeg native led Portland and tied for seventh in WHL scoring during a spectacular breakout season - in which he more than tripled his rookie numbers from 2015-16. However, he was sidelined early by a bout of mononucleosis and struggled to find his game after returning.

No player fell further in the rankings this season than towering Russian winger Nikita Popugaev.
The Moscow native fired 19 goals in his first 25 games with Moose Jaw, however his play tailed off in December and he was dealt a month later to Prince George where he continued to sputter.

Did I have a little too much appreciation for it in 2017? Hopefully the injury troubles are behind him and the Flames are happy with this pick twice. Was he a first-round pick? Does he still have a chance to be an impact top-six player and dynamic power play option? But there were — and are — warts in his game.
He lands at No. He can, however, play at the top of the roster with more talented players which is a skill and help out on the power play. Advertisement 19. I would argue Texier has the higher ceiling while Bemstrom has the lower floor. Given the way I normally evaluate players, Texier should probably be ahead of Bemstrom for that reason. I do think Bemstrom has shown more consistency at the pro level, though, so that gave him a very slight edge. Texier is definitely a better passer, skater and carrier so it will be interesting to see if he can put it all together in the next couple of years or if he settles as a fine middle-six forward rather than an impact one.
I really liked him in 2017 and I really like him now. But my concern with projecting him going forward is also the same now as it was then. By having him so high, there was a ripple effect on the rest of my board near the top. Yes, I do. Was he rushed through college and into the pro level too quickly? Yes, he was. Yes, there were.
I was impressed by his hands in traffic and his ability to turn nothing into something. And I was prepared to overlook concerns of tempo and athleticism. This is one of my bigger misses ever. But he has handled it extremely well. The offensive tools are always going to be there. His defensive game and strength, particularly after all of the time he missed, took a little longer to adjust to the AHL. But he really began to hit his stride in the back half of this season, with 11 points in his last 13 AHL games.
He may struggle to reach his ceiling on an Avalanche team that already has Makar and Samuel Girard as offensive options on the blue line, with Bowen Byram on the way, but I still think he has the other tools he needs to be a regular contributor on a contending team. I was a big fan in his draft year, even as he battled mono and things got away from him a little.
The team was widely expected to be targeting a forward with the pick, however, at the time, Max Comtois, who had been ranked as high as the top-10, has seen his stock drop all the way out of the first round. In hindsight, Comtois was in fact worthy of a first-round pick, however, just falling out of the top-10. Despite being moved out of the desert and onto colder pastures, Suzuki is well on his way to proving his value at the NHL as a rookie with the Canadiens. Original Pick: Cal Foote The Lightning desired a defenseman to slide into their top-four with the 14th overall selection. With several blueliners projected to go in the second half of the first round, Al Murray opted for Foote. The Kelowna Rockets product tallied three more points than Henri Jokiharju in his draft year, but the latter has begun his professional career on a more intriguing note.
Original Pick: Erik Brannstrom After losing draft stock in the weeks leading up to the draft, Nolan Patrick maintained his draft value and was selected by the Flyers in the two-hole. Nonetheless, he is currently forecasting as a satisfactory middle-six center, value worthy of a 15th overall pick. Original Pick: Juuso Valimaki Few players recognition has grown as much over the previous twelve months than the Blue Jackets forward Bemstrom. That being said, what fun would it be if we only had one player jump 100-spots in our re-draft. Batherson was worthy of a first-round draft-pick, and Boston would be as good a team as any to make the pick. Original Pick: Robert Thomas With Thomas being selected 13 picks earlier in our re-draft, the Blues find themselves in a difficult spot in attempting to find any kind of an equivalent.

Finally, despite having the best odds to win the Draft Lottery, they ended up falling all the way to fourth. However, while this looked like a stroke of bad luck that would set the franchise back years, it ended up becoming a centerpiece of their rapid rebuild to glory. This, of course, was due in no small part to their selection of Cale Makar. Needless to say, Cale Makar is a true superstar that will be a face of the NHL for years if not decades. However, he quickly went about proving any skeptics wrong by tearing up the NCAA and winning the 2019 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college.
Next, he joined the team for the 2019 postseason, where he played 10 games and posted six points. Following this strong start, he went on to win the 2020 Calder Trophy as the top rookie of the year and then went on to dominate the league in 2021-22 en route to winning the Norris Trophy. Finally, he capped everything off by claiming the 2022 Stanley Cup and winning the Conn Smythe Award. Needless to say, this pick will be a defining moment for the Avalanche over the next decade-plus. Somehow, by falling down the draft board, Colorado were able to still claim the best player of the 2022 Draft.
Elias Pettersson — Vancouver Canucks Despite having the second-best odds to win the draft lottery, the Vancouver Canucks fell all the way back to fifth, putting them in that awkward spot where they would miss out on the perceived top talents but still should be able to select an impactful player. As they took the stage to make the fifth-overall selection, however, few were ready for what they were about to announce. The Canucks seemingly reached and selected forward Elias Pettersson, who divided the experts. Some havd him ranked in the top ten while others saw him as a late-first rounder at best. Once Pettersson took the ice for the Canucks, he left any of his doubters behind.

His skating is surprisingly quick, and his stride long and fluid. He plays a strong two-way game and covers a lot of ground for a big man. Hague scored 14 goals last season, showing off a powerful slap shot on the power play. He is able to move laterally and walk the line to open up shooting lanes to get his shot through. Hague could stand to improve his passing skills this season though. He makes a decent breakout pass from his own end, but needs to be a bit more patient with the puck at the oppositions blue.
The big man also shows good defensive instincts for a player his age. Vaakanainen has excellent hockey IQ. He reads the play very well in both the offensive and defensive ends of the ice. He chooses to make the smart plays both with and without the puck. Defensively he has great gap control and positioning. He also can skate the puck out of danger in his own zone, and start the transition game with a good first pass. Offensively he has a hard accurate shot, and the vision to be a play maker from the blue line. He has a great first step, excellent agility, and the edge work necessary to make quick cuts on a dime.
He combines this with the soft hands to control the puck and make plays in tight spaces and at top speed. Morand is deadly in close to the net. He can make a quick deke on a goaltender, fire the puck to the top of the net, or make a quick pass to a teammate. Morand might be small, but he is not afraid to get involved in battles for the puck in the corner, or in front of the net. He is often found at the middle of post-whistle scrums as well.
