Austin bomber remembered as smart, kind but also intimidating
Along with other evidence, including store receipts, authorities were able to trace the suspect back to the Williamson County hotel Tuesday night, officials said. The wave of bombings began March 2nd, when Anthony Stephen House , a 39-year-old father and athlete, was killed by a package bomb left on his front porch. Both explosions happened after the victims handled packages left on their respective doorsteps. House and Mason, both of whom were black, had a long history as family friends who attended the same church, according to a local NAACP president.
A few hours later, Esperanza Herrera, 75, was critically injured as a second bomb exploded at her residence. The first three explosions were not delivered by the US Postal service or services like FedEx or UPS, rather they were left on the doorsteps of the victims. The first three explosions killed or wounded African-Americans and one Hispanic person. This led to allegations that the attacks could have been racially motivated. A fourth blast was recorded in a predominantly white neighborhood and injured two white men , NBC News is reporting.
But the fourth bomb was seemingly detonated at random, injuring Will Grote, 22, and Colton Mathis, 23 - who were both white - when they triggered a tripwire. Dan Defenbaugh, a former FBI bomb investigator, previously warned police could "have a serial killer on their hands". Then they reached out to the bomber — and they got an answer.
Between 1978 and 1995, the former Harvard maths prodigy targeted universities and airlines with mailed or hand-delivered bombs. He killed three people and injured 23 others.
A SWAT officer fired his weapon at the suspect after another officer was knocked down by the blast.
It is unclear whether the officer shot the suspect. Authorities do not know at this time whether Conditt acted alone or what his motive may have been for carrying out the bombings; police have not yet found any note or manifesto explaining his actions. Austin police chief Brian Manley said the suspect is responsible for all the incidents in the Texas capital.
He urged residents to remain alert, saying that authorities do not know where Conditt had been in the past 24 hours and if he sent additional packages.

The cellphone number tied Conditt to bombing sites around Austin, but McCaul said Conditt had eluded authorities by powering off the phone for long stretches. They finally found him early Wednesday at a hotel north of Austin, and officers prepared to move in for an arrest. Conditt drove into a ditch on the side of the road, and SWAT officers approached, banging on his window. Police found him because he turned his phone back on, McCaul said.

One of the packages later exploded on a conveyor belt at a FedEx sorting facility outside of San Antonio. The second package was intercepted by law enforcement officials at a facility near Austin airport, and it was confirmed to be concealing a bomb. One of the bombs killed college-bound Drayeln Mason, 17, and injured his mother as they opened the package inside the kitchen. A few hours later, Esperanza Herrera, 75, was critically injured as a second bomb exploded at her residence. The first three explosions were not delivered by the US Postal service or services like FedEx or UPS, rather they were left on the doorsteps of the victims.
