2006: The News Year That Was
In the Middle East, Israel and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militia fought a month-long war during the summer. More than nine hundred people were killed. Much of southern Lebanon was severely damaged. Robert Gates was approved as the new defense secretary. In August, officials in Britain said they prevented a terrorist plot to bomb several passenger airplanes over the Atlantic Ocean.
This led to new restrictions on what passengers can carry on planes. Fighting between rebels and government forces has killed more than two hundred thousand people. Our reports can be found on our Web site, voaspecialenglish.
August 1 August — Steve McClaren is officially appointed as manager of the England national football team. Her death is reported to be suspicious and police launch a murder inquiry. There are also concerns about another Ipswich prostitute, 19-year-old Tania Nicol, who went missing on 30 October.
The murders are soon linked to the Bandidos motorcycle gang. The long-range Taepodong-2 reportedly failed in mid-air over the Sea of Japan.
The arrests were made in London, Birmingham, and High Wycombe in an overnight operation. Of the passengers and crew, 49 of 50 are confirmed dead in the hours following the crash.
The breadth of this optimism is revealed today by the discussion website Edge. Steven Pinker Psychologist, Harvard University, author of The Blank Slate In 16th-century Paris, a popular form of entertainment was cat-burning, in which a cat hoisted on a stage was slowly lowered into a fire. As horrific as present-day events are, such sadism would be unthinkable today in most of the world. This is just one example of the most important and under appreciated trend in the history of our species: the decline of violence. My optimism lies in the hope that the decline of force over the centuries is a real phenomenon, that it is the product of systematic forces that will continue to operate, and that we can identify those forces and perhaps concentrate and bottle them.

A News Bulletin Thirty five vehicles were involved in a multiple collision on the M. The accident occurred about three miles south of the Newport Pagnell service area when an articulated lorry carrying a load of steel bars jack-knifed and overturned. A number of lorry drivers and motorists were unable to pull up in time and ran into the overturned vehicle, causing a major pile-up. Some of the steel bars from the load were flung by the impact across the central reserve into the southbound carriageway, which was restricted to single-lane working because of repairs and resurfacing, causing several minor accidents. With both carriageways blocked, police closed the motorway for a time, and diversion signs were posted at the nearest slip roads. Breakdown vehicles and ambulances had considerable difficulty in reaching the scene of the accident because of fog.
This was dense in places, and the flashing amber light signals had been switched on for most of the night. So far there are no reports of anyone seriously injured in the accident. This accident, the fourth involving a multiple pile-up of vehicles in the last month, comes just as the first National Conference on Motorway Use is getting under way. At the opening meeting in London last night, Sir John Stone, the Metropolitan Area Traffic Adviser, criticised the standard of motorway driving in this country. He said that there was evidence that many of the basic disciplines of motorway use had yet to be learned by British drivers.
Lane discipline was much worse in this country than in America; and the habits of drivers when overtaking were particularly bad. One saw far too much dangerous pulling-out without an adequate signal having been given, and there was a similarly dangerous tendency for drivers to cut in after overtaking.

Stories, on the other hand, grow downwards, seeking the cultural nutrients in the soil. When David Edgar, chairing a session on theatre and censorship, asked the Northern Irish playwright Gary Mitchell whether he spoke for the Protestant community in North Belfast, Mitchell replied pugnaciously that he spoke only for himself. Mitchell knows all too well what it means to be accused of representing a community. He calmly described the intimidation that he and his family have received at the hands of loyalist paramilitaries who object to his portrayals of their culture.
Her play Bells, staged last year at the Birmingham Rep, explores the world of the mujra: so-called dancing clubs prevalent throughout South Asia and now common in Britain. As a young girl, Whittaker-Khan watched candy-coated Bollywood representations of the mujra, and wanted to be a courtesan when she grew up.

As a young girl, Whittaker-Khan watched candy-coated Bollywood representations of the mujra, and wanted to be a courtesan when she grew up. Even in writing Bells, she explained, she was as much attracted by the glamour as she was horrified by the closeted prostitution. Jung Chang, Monica Ali and Tahar Ben Jelloun all told similar stories of the perils involved in becoming the scribe for experiences wider than their own. The real estate market may be slowing. Daniel Dennett Professor of Philosophy, Tufts University, author of Breaking the Spell I expect to live to see the evaporation of the powerful mystique of religion. I think that in about 25 years almost all religions will have evolved into very different phenomena. With the worldwide spread of information technology not just the internet, but cell phones and portable radios and television , it is no longer feasible for guardians of religious traditions to protect their young from exposure to the kinds of facts and, yes, of course, misinformation and junk of every genre that gently, irresistibly undermine the mindsets requisite for religious fanaticism and intolerance. Voters in democracy sometimes make good choices and avoid bad choices cf some recent elections in a major First World country.
