Somewhat of a similar point to above, Gauthier likes to take risks on the ice, especially when trying to get creative with the puck on his stick in the offensive third of the ice. Gauthier may look to choose the safer play over the riskier play at times, which would not cost his team possession of the puck, while at the same time, prolonging the time they have the puck in the offensive zone. Lastly, Gauthier has shown his shift-to-shift consistency can waver a little bit. Overall Outlook Although Gauthier does have the ability to play both left wing and center, his overall game may be suited more to a left-wing role at the next level. His ability to use his stride and his speed to break out wide and fly past defenders in the offensive zone.
Looking at his shooting stats over those tracked games, he fired 23 total shots, with 15 of them hitting the net 65. Of those shots, 39. It also helps that 88.
What do these numbers tell us? These numbers tell us that Cutter Gauthier is a very smart forward that can beat teams in multiple ways, without being predictable. He does not attack high-danger very often, however, when he does, he is one of the most effective players in this class doing so. That makes him not only a safer option early in the draft, but also a very high upside option as well. But how well does he do with moving the puck up the ice to gain offensive opportunities? That is where some concerns lie, though he certainly has the skills to improve. When it comes to breaking out of the defensive zone, across those three tracked games, Gauthier cleared the zone with possession on 52. Not to mention, his individual zone exit percentage.
In other words the percentage in which Gauthier skated the puck out of the defensive zone himself, successfully. That was down at 26. When it came to entering the offensive zone, Gauthier was directly involved in 36 entry attempts. He successfully gained the offensive zone with possession on 58. His individual zone entry percentage is a little bit more promising, at 41. As mentioned earlier, despite the numbers, Gauthier absolutely has the skill set to improve in his effectiveness through the neutral zone. As has already been stated several times, his combination of size, fluid and slippery skating, strong stickhandling, and high end IQ all make him the type of player to greatly improve his transitional stats. Consistency is an issue for him from a shift-to-shift perspective.
Perhaps more impressive than the goal totals themselves is the variety of ways in which Gauthier was able to find the back of the net throughout the season. He is opportunistic around the net, positioning himself well for rebound chances or backdoor passes.
He can beat defenders with strong power moves to the net and he is a dangerous one-touch scorer who can pounce on loose pucks in the slot or hammer one-timers from the faceoff circle. Gauthier was always considered a fairly safe pick due to his projectable frame and well-rounded game but he took his offense to another level this year and could end up being selected in the top-10 of the 2022 NHL Draft as a result. Gauthier is a skilled, active player in the offensive zone who has the ability to beat goaltenders with his powerful, accurate shot. Gauthier can make plays off the wall, plays a solid physical game, and is an efficient distributor who utilizes his teammates effectively. His skating is good, not great, but he makes smart reads and maintains strong positioning all over the ice to help drive possession.
Gauthier was asked about his refusal to play for the Flyers. He acknowledged the desire for answers, but he kept his cards close to the vest regarding the matter.
