The Kingston, Ontario native can play on the wing but showcased at the Top Prospects Game in January that he is very effective playing in the middle. The fifth-ranked prospect is Casey Mittelstadt, the top American-born player. Mittelstadt ripped apart the high school circuit averaging 2. Oettinger looks like the future No. Vaakanainen might be an NHL regular but it will almost certainly be in a depth role. Norris has broken out since leaving the San Jose organization. He was viewed by most as a mid second-rounder. Joseph was viewed as a safe, dependable defender with limited upside on draft day and it would be shocking to see him even reach that level at this point. He played three seasons at the University of Denver and signed with Chicago this spring. He has a chance to make an immediate impact in The Windy City. His NHL debut should come in 2020-21. I like Poehling as a depth option but the lack of offense he generates really limits his overall ceiling. He can help on the power play and kill penalties. He reminds me of Anthony Cirelli. He might be a regular in Boston as soon as next season. He saw his stock dip over the course of two seasons at the University of Michigan only to explode 31 goals, 61 points in 56 games in his first AHL season.
He should be in Ottawa full time this fall. He was far better in his first AHL campaign 27 goals, 53 points in 61 games than I ever would have imagined. Jokiharju is a third-pairing regular for Buffalo.

2017 Tiered NHL Draft Rankings
This season we will see whether or not Vilardi can fully recover from the injuries that have plagued his career thus far. He plays a simple but highly effective game, using his slick hands to carry the puck into vantage points where he can beat the goalie himself with or find a teammate with ease. He is a safe bet to be a second-line center, having produced well but not extraordinarily at all levels. He is lethal in the offensive zone, hard to get off the puck and is an elite passer.
Similar to Patrick and Vilardi, Glass is another big, talented Canadian centreman whose future is hard to project given his injury history. However, he has shown improvement at the pro level and he is too talented not to make the NHL. When the opposition inevitably closes in on him, he can also make space for himself with his creativity.
He is a fluid skater, so he generates a lot of offense on the rush and he is effective on the powerplay. Despite having the fourth-most games played out of this class, the upside of the players above him is higher. Rather than trying to rush the puck every time, he identifies when he can burn the defender and when to make a play.
He is also getting better at producing from a standstill and could play on the powerplay in the NHL. He is an elite skater who is incredibly poised with the puck on his stick. The analytics rate him highly due to his efficiency at carrying the puck, but he will need to start using his standout puck skills to create offense to justify this ranking.
This season he has thrived in an increased role. Marie Greyhounds, but he still projects as a top-six offensive talent in the NHL. He then exploded the next year and was one of the best players in the league and for Team Canada as they won gold at the World Juniors.
His size and skill have turned him into a menace at the AHL level. His average footspeed is the only thing holding him back. His offense has slowed down a bit after turning pro in his draft-year-plus-one season but has been playing tough matchups and killing penalties.
San Jose previously acquired this pick as the result of a trade on May 26, 2016, that sent Dylan Sadowy to Detroit in exchange for this pick. This year was no different with Noah Cates a raw Joe Pavelski type , big goalie Kirill Ustimenko and that kid who went second overall who might be pretty decent… All jokes aside, Hextall and his staff get lots of different skill sets and positional needs every draft, which puts them in a great spot for the future. Another notable dropper was Matthew Strome, who had to wait until the fourth round before Philly snapped up the big, smart scorer. Everyone knows that Strome and to a lesser extent Vilardi needs to iron out his footwork, but he was generally seen as a second-rounder.

However he suffered another health setback late in the regular season - an unspecified upper-body injury - and missed the WHL playoffs.
