Is this simply a case of the spotlight being so strong, for so long, that his weaknesses have been magnified? The answer is probably no. There are legitimate concerns over his game. He is undersized, he is not the best skater, and early this season a knee injury that required surgery has put him out for four months. Kiviharju is expected to be healthy again in February. However, in a league where top pairing defensemen are at a premium, if Kiviharju falls outside the first? There is the potential for one of the bigger draft steals in recent history.
While there are concerns about his game the upside is inarguable. His hockey IQ would be the envy of most NHLers, he is almost always two-steps ahead and rarely makes bad decisions. This, combined with fantastic vision, great passing and silky hands means he is great in transition, and controls play when set-up in the OZ. Defensively he has an active stick, good gap control, and thrives on breaking up plays before they develop. He is also strong down low, even against players 15 years older and 50lbs heavier. His upside is still a 1 defenseman despite the concerns.
Mews has excellent handling that he can ulitize to navigate through tight pressure to get separation before completing an outlet feed. While he has had productive shifts where he pushed pace, there are shifts in which I see Mews will encounter pressure and pass into traffic instead of using his handling to open up an uncontested passing lane. Defensively, Mews will struggle with gap control from time to time and his defensive work could use further refinement, but when you to balance that with his distribution with the puck you are looking at a mid-to-late first round prospect. Although there may be something to this, Ritchie is still doing a lot of things very well. I have a tough time seeing him falling out of round 1 as the season goes along. His feet and hands are ultra quick making him an exceptional puck carrier.
If you give Ritchie time to pickup speed and attack defenders downhill, you will be sorry after he beats you, and secures middle ice. Since the new year of this past season, Yakemchuk has really started to take strides, and his game continues to round itself out. Yakemchuk has a nice blend of size, skill, and aggressiveness that allow him to be a force all over the ice. His instincts are great, and he joins the rush when he feels he can contribute to the play. He holds his own in the defensive zone with his size and ability to separate puck carriers from the puck to quick start offense the other way for his side. He plays a gritty grame and works the boards with great pressure shift in shift out.
He is defensively responsible in transition and will put up a tough fight at open ice. In the defensive zone, he will fall back to the low slot and provide support to his defensemen down low. Most of his MHL primary 5v5 points have come off of odd man rushes. His puck movement in transition is excellent. His handling and distribution is excellent. He is shifty, mobile, agile and has tremendous speed.
Basha does a good job of utilizing tight passing lanes to the slot. He will grab possession of loose pucks off the boards, drive to the trapezoid and look to feather passes to the low slot. I could see Basha being a riser in the next of rankings. Josh Tessler 27 — Tanner Howe, F, Regina Tanner Howe plays a high-energy skilled game with a dogged off-puck game that allows him to play bigger than he is. I expect him to rise as the year goes on, but if his microstat profile stays the same, his size will see him slip in the draft. Whenever he has the puck outside of the slot and pressure intensifies, he looks for the tighest gaps and uses them to get pucks to the slot.
He has great handling and will implement shot fakes and toe drags to net the separation that he needs to get a pass off. When shooting from range, he has a very quick shot release and will look to target glove side. He also tallied quite a few backdoor goals at 5v5 this season by being in the right space at the right time. Defensively, he plays more of a support role, but always looks to cement himself in open ice towards the blue line so he can provide an outlet lane for his defensemen. Marques has middle six upside. On the flip side, he will use pivots to shake free of pressure when he has the puck.
From a transition perspective, Ustinkov looks to usually make an outlet pass from the backend to a teammate further up in the defensive zone and let his forwards push play up ice. But, there are some shifts in which he looks to be a bit more of a driver in transition. He will skate up the offensive zone blue line to be a passing option for his teammates in the neutral zone, facilitate a controlled zone entry once he has the puck on his stick, push the puck up the boards and try to find a gap to get a pass off to a teammate down in the zone.

So, what does this mean for Adam? Absolutely nothing! Remember Fedor Fedorov? Joel Lundqvist? Steve Kariya? Jiricek is a mobile two-way defenceman who has good poise for his age, very good vision, and loves to shoot from the blue line. He also protects the puck well when he has it on his stick and positions himself well on the defensive side. Jiricek projects as a top-four two-way defenceman at the NHL level. Not to be forgotten is he also has a very good shot. In his rookie season in the OHL, Mews scored 12 goals and 31 points in 55 games. This year, he leads his team in points from defencemen with six through 10 games. As a rookie in the KHL this year, Silayev has two goals and eight points in 25 games. His size, intelligence, and skating are his best attributes, and if he can continue to improve, he could become a top-pair defenceman in the NHL.
Importantly, there are no adjustments made for off-ice "intangibles" that are often discussed in team scouting meetings. Philosophically, a public ranking differs immensely from a team list. Teams must consider a variety of factors when building a team and culture. Teams move players around, or take them off the list completely, for various reasons that may come from the executives. Public rankings serve to provide insight into who the best players may be without considering how they will fit a certain team, the overall strategy based on the number of selections a particular team owns, and most importantly, whether a scouting director is willing to select players with a higher risk factor. The latter is believed to be a lock to play NHL minutes on the blue line while having a lower ceiling than Michkov, who fell due to factors unrelated to his on-ice play.

He has a solid mentor in Colorado Avalanche prospect Sean Behrens, helping him to understand the pressure of playing big minutes against quality competition. There were a few times last year when Buium looked like the best player on the ice — other times, he can be invisible.
He looks just like his brother, in both good and bad ways. A high-end puck-mover, Hutson can electrify with some of his moves to get himself out of trouble on the attack. He brings a competitive spirit to every game and he leaves nothing on the table when going for a hit. At his core, Elick has the makings of a shutdown defenseman that, as long as he keeps his offensive game simple, should have no issue adjusting to the pro game.
He sometimes relies a bit too much on his creativity, which could hurt him in the pro ranks. While Hutson is more of the point-producer, Emery helps get the play started by retrieving the puck and then playing a more passive game. And he does it quickly, with one scout comparing him to the Road Runner in how he gets where he needs to be so swiftly. Sennecke is leading the charge and is coming off a handful of three-point performance.
He put up good numbers but was prone to make some crazy miscues while dishing the puck out. But when Mews is on his game, he commands attention like very few across the OHL. Still, he looked great at the Hlinka Gretzky, showing solid two-way ability and quick hands. Howe started off spectacularly with six points in his first three games but has quieted down to a pace closer to his 85-point output last year.
He made a splash with 45 points last year, displaying his powerful release against unsuspecting goalies. At 6-foot-2 and 198 pounds, he has size, and he skates well enough for his frame, too.
Misa is supremely tenacious and will backcheck hard to try to force as many turnovers as he can.
Combine that with poor size and just good skill and this is probably what separates him from a player like Zach Benson in 2023. Ritchie has very quick feet and hands with excellent puckhandling posture, making him an excellent puck carrier. Especially when given time and space to attack downhill, Ritchie is particularly adept at using those hands to find the middle of the ice for high-quality chances.
Ritchie is also an effective positionally-focused player, using great puck spacing and support in all three zones and prioritizing strong body positioning before establishing puck possession. The next steps for Ritchie will be improving his standstill explosiveness and checking lanes which hinders his ability to win puck battles and adding more layers of deception to his playmaking. Ritchie has a good read of where his options are but too often telegraphs his intentions, making many of his passes unnecessarily risky.
If Ritchie can improve in these areas and continue to develop, he could challenge Catton and Lindstrom for a top WHL draft-eligible. Besides the name pedigree, Iginla is an easy player to root for. His habits away from the puck are a definite strength, from his frequent scanning, active stick, good forechecking routes and hard-nosed backchecking.
He gets off the wall to the middle quickly, and can also drift into high-danger areas, and when paired with his lightning-quick snapshot, makes him a dangerous goal scorer. Iginla might lack the high-end dynamism of some of the other WHLers in this class, but his combination of all-around skills and pro-level habits make him a good bet to be a contributing NHLer. He constantly tries to take on opponents one-on-one, pushes through checks with shoulder drops and great puck placement, and always goes for the throat with his offensive zone incursions.
A major difference between Connelly last year versus this year, is that he is trusting his teammates a lot more to complete his plays. As a result, his playmaking game has grown and he has adopted a distributor role that fits his skillset better than the finisher role he was trying to force last year. His defensive game is lacklustre; his motor is very inconsistent, and there have been major questions regarding his character that will likely have some teams very hesitant to bet on his upside, no matter how high it is.
Developing a more mature game and showing whoever picks him that he can improve will be essential if he is going to reach his top-line ceiling. He is clicking at a goal per game and 30 points in 18 matches played as of writing this. Beyond the point totals, however, what makes Parascak so interesting is the way he puts up those points.
A vast majority of the points he has produced so far have come from the low slot and off one-touch plays, which seems strange at first given how poor his skating is. Perfectly-timed inside cuts, one-touch passes and net drives put him and his teammates in prime scoring real estate almost every shift, and he has also improved his long-range scoring to complement his short-range threat. His trademark mobility is as present as ever and is now employing multiple layers of deception at multiple levels.
His passing game is remarkable, as he is able to identify soft ice regularly even at this intermediate level. He has become much better at anticipating play, and become a rather proficient stick-checker as well. He has plenty of time to get there, and he looks plenty impressive as is.
If he continues on this path, he can make his placement on draft day a very difficult conversation. And boy did he ever. The undersized winger is now the captain of his team at 18 years old, and by far their leader in production and overall on-ice impact.
Often their lone forward when defending a 5 on 3 power play, often out in the last minute of the game to win a key faceoff or defend the lead, Howe is the go-to guy in Regina in defensive situations as well. With solid skating, a high-end motor and surprisingly good board battle mechanics, Howe always outworks his opponents along the boards. His puck skills need refining, but he should easily work his way into an NHL middle six in the near future.
As his highlight-reel plays decreased, however, his game got more nuanced and scout-friendly. The Lumberjacks forward has some clear weaknesses — the lack of knee bend in his skating holds him back as he struggles to cut back against pressure and get involved in offensive transitions, and his defensive game falters as a result as well — but the upside is there. He makes plays in-stride, identifies his next play early, and knows when to let on-ice scenarios develop instead of rushing his ideas.
He then executes well with a solid shot, great hands and adept passing skills. Offensively, he flashes brilliant skill, combined with advanced anticipation, creativity, deception, and processing speed. On the other hand, his defensive play has turned a fair few hairs on our heads gray already.
His loose gap control, very inconsistent defensive scanning both against the rush and the cycle, and perception of secondary scoring threats have all plagued our early viewings and contributed to his fall outside our top 20, despite the elite skill in a class lacking just that. Hutson could easily rocket up our board with increased consistency in his play and a bit of polishing on his defensive game as the season progresses, but for now, he falls at 24. Matvei Shuravin, LD — Krasnaya Armiya Moscow MHL Graham Montgomery — Not many draft-eligible players play with the kind of poise and confidence Shuravin does when they are playing against grown men in the second-best league in the world.
Physically, he is very raw. His confidence and hockey sense allow him to make up for his below-average puck skills. He manages gaps well and positions himself correctly more often than not.
This combined with his smooth skating and willingness to engage physically gives him a solid foundation as a defensive defenseman.

His ice time dwindled as time went on, but his play against U-20 players has been impressive. He can tend to follow the game too often, so he needs to get out of his comfort zone and attack more. Simon Zether, C Rogle, Sweden U-20 Zether is a 6-foot-3 forward who can put significant power behind his shot while being quite impressive in tight to the net.
But in a recent viewing of him against U-20 competition on Friday, Zether had two goals, three points and seven shots in a 5-1 win — the fifth time he had three or more points this year. He routinely faces 35-plus shots a game and seems to perform better the busier he is. Still, Leenders looks like the best goalie in a draft for any team looking for depth in the crease. Imposing, long reach, deceptive skater. Adam Jecho, C Edmonton, WHL Jecho has been on draft radars for a few years now, having played in a whopping three Hlinka Gretzky Cups, mixing speed and size together to form an interesting package. He just missed the 50-point mark as a rookie with the Drakkar, and could very well crack 50 goals this year. A shoot-first winger, he could serve to use his teammates a bit more, but he has top-six scoring upside.
But the University of Denver commit makes up for it in slick playmaking and smart decision-making, something he showed in spades as a 16-year-old rookie in the USHL.

The big mover from our preseason rankings has been creating a buzz in hockey circles - Cayden Lindstrom. Defenseman Anton Silayev has also moved up to the top 5.
He was also good for Finland at the 2024 World Juniors in Sweden, though the stat sheet might not give you the best idea of how impactful he was. The biggest question with Helenius is if he has more skill to show. He has shown flashes of skill against his peers that make you think he could be a top-line player in the NHL, but then whenever he plays against men he plays a more reserved and safe game. Is he simply doing that in order to earn minutes as a young pro or does he not have enough skill to beat men? Buium has grown at least one inch since last season which bodes well for his draft stock since his biggest weakness at this point is his physical play.
Luckily for Buium, he is an excellent skater and has plenty of hockey sense which allows him to defend incredibly well in the NCAA, and will likely help him in the NHL as well. He has good skill with the puck but his calling card will be his skating and sense which he uses to his advantage best on the rush both as a passer and a scoring threat. His performance for the Gold medal winning American team was great and I think that level of success from an 18-year-old will draw a ton of NHL attention. He plays a similar style to his brother, with lots of physical engagement and a penchant for taking big point shots, but he appears to be a better and more confident skater at the same age. Adam produces a ton of chances on offense from the blueline, readily activating into play to support his teammates and keep the puck moving. Jiricek is really great at scanning the play off puck and he persists through pressure quite well so I think he will be able to cut down on the over-the-top risks in time. I like him as a two-way defensive prospect and his right-handed shot and 6-foot-2 frame will help him out on draft day.
The biggest thing holding him back this year was a major injury that has kept him out of the lineup since he sustained it in the first game of the World Juniors in December. After scoring just 18 points with the Seattle Thunderbirds last season, spending portions of the season being scratched, Iginla has flourished with the Kelowna Rockets. Regardless, he works hard and is often the first guy in on the forecheck. Once the top-12 or so prospects are off the board, Iginla will be the next best option for a team looking to add some speed and goal scoring, things that are always in short supply. Aron Kiviharju, LD, HIFK Liiga Aron Kiviharju has been the most talked about 2024 Draft eligible prospect over the two or three years, after playing most of his age-15 season in the top U20 junior league in Finland, scoring roughly a point per game as a small defenseman. He is an excellent puck handler in transition and walks the blue-line very confidently in the offensive zone. Kiviharju suffered a knee injury in a practice this Fall that led him to miss the majority of his draft year.
Kiviharju is a really intelligent puck mover, controlling play with a poise beyond his years. He finished the season in the top 20 for goals and points in the OHL which is really impressive for a draft eligible player on a weaker team. Greentree does most things well, fighting hard in puck battles, making smart passes, and handling defensive responsibilities well. His greatest strength is his shot which looks like a quality NHL tool though his skill with the puck is noteworthy as well. The biggest barrier in the way of NHL success for Greentree at the moment is his skating. His hands are really quick and he plays with a ton of deception which made him one of the most dangerous offensive players in the entire USHL this season. Many NHL teams have reportedly expressed concern in drafting him due to an incident involving him posting a picture of a swastika on social media a little over a year ago.
However, he can get a bit of tunnel vision and try to play hero-puck a bit, losing sight of the best play and turning the puck over by trying to deke too much. He has some work to do filling out his rather skinny 6-foot-3 frame, but there is some real promise in his offensive game. Chernyshov plays a very direct style, charging the net frequently whether he has the puck or not. He has had a rather slow start to this year production-wise, but his skill set looks well designed for the pro game with the ability to make strong plays and smart decisions at a higher pace than most teenagers. He has a really well-rounded tool kit as a 6-foot-1 center who skates well, has excellent skill with the puck and can create chances at will in the USHL.
