Brian Mulroney Cause Of Death, Obituary: What Happened to Former Canada PM? How Did He Die? Funeral
They lost 154 out of 156 seats and official party status — a blow from which they never recovered, leading to a merger with a more right-wing offshoot a decade later. Various social, economic, and political factors contributed to this blowout. The privatization drive led to Canadians losing direct control over foundational elements of the national economy. By the mid-1980s, these sectors included Petro-Canada , a vertically integrated state oil company; Air Canada, the national airline; aircraft manufacturers Canadair and De Havilland; Canadian National, the national railway; and Connaught Labs , a major producer of pharmaceuticals, among an additional estimated three hundred publicly owned corporations. Public corporations helped guarantee a stable and prosperous middle class as much as they guaranteed economic — and by extension political — autonomy from the United States. Moreover, public ownership ensured these corporations served the public interest first and foremost. Privatization was sold to the public as a solution to lower federal debt, reduce government involvement in the economy, and potentially create profitable private corporations where inefficiency and waste had allegedly prevailed.
However, the argument that government involvement in the economy was inherently bad was far more ideological than evidence based. Langford correctly anticipated that privatization would simply involve the transfer of public corporations and assets to the private sector, citing Brian Mulroney himself, who had said years earlier that takeovers only benefit lawyers and accountants. The Great Privatization Swindle Time and again, privatization has proven detrimental for the Canadian public. Just three years after that merger, Air Canada went into bankruptcy protection. After its second bailout, it sought to acquire another competitor.
His daughter Caroline Mulroney said Wednesday in a written statement that the family expects him to be "back to normal in the coming weeks. The Toronto Star, citing an interview with one of his sons, Mark, said that the treatment began last fall. Mulroney, 84, was prime minister from 1984 to 1993, as leader of the Progressive Conservatives.
They would get calls from Mulroney as often as every week. Spokes—a larger group, generally under the sway of hubs—might receive only one or two calls a year. But if a spoke was promoted, appeared in the newspaper, or experienced a death in the family, Mulroney would fire off a personal note. The result was a vast intelligence-gathering operation. If Mulroney, or one of his clients, encountered resistance in a negotiation or labour dispute, he would leverage his Rolodex to sweeten the deal or gain concessions. He always knew a guy. But while the theatre of operations expanded, the basic system stayed the same. If he needed to make a deal, Mulroney picked up the phone. Before the deal was signed, negotiators slogged through several rounds of talks, getting nowhere. The numbers alone suggest Mulroney has been vindicated. But the triumph of NAFTA has also meant that a generation of Canadian politicians, having learned to take the trade deal for granted, never expected they would now find themselves scrambling to save it. NAFTA delivered the goods for investors, but the benefits for the rest of us are mostly theoretical. Of course, Mulroney was not sent to Washington to provide an unvarnished assessment of the details. He was sent to varnish. His testimony in front of the Senate committee was characterized by the performative charm, soaring rhetoric, and twinkle-eyed blarney that delivered him two majority governments.
His sights already set on a political career, Mulroney went to Universite Laval in Quebec City for his law degree. There, he connected with francophones and improved his French, which was faltering after years away from Quebec. Fellow student Bouchard, a bookish nationalist, became a close friend. It was the early 1960s and young Mulroney had a front-row seat to the ferment of the Quiet Revolution, a period when francophones started to take the levers of power in Quebec society. He now thought like a Quebecer.

Mulroney routinely makes himself available to student groups and nonprofit organizations, often on short notice. When my son was in high school, the son of an acquaintance wanted to create a political science club. On a whim, he sent a note to Mulroney, with whom he had no connection, asking for help. Friends observe — and Mulroney agrees — that age has mellowed his combative nature and further enhanced his appreciation of his blessings. In public, Mulroney stays determinedly clear from commenting on partisan politics. He is highly complimentary of former prime minister Paul Martin — whom he has known for decades — for his efforts on Indigenous issues, and similarly praises the late John Turner, with whom he clashed so memorably in two election campaigns, in 1984 and 1988.
The one exception is Lucien Bouchard. The two men have been estranged ever since. That sense of betrayal endures; Mulroney made it politely clear during our talks that he will not discuss Bouchard. But in the tight circles of Quebec, they inevitably cross paths. Their class of 1963 is believed to be the only one in Canada to produce both a prime minister and premier. The faculty will unveil a plaque honoring the federalist prime minister who tried so hard to bring Quebec in as a signatory to the constitution, and the former premier, now back to his roots as a committed sovereigntist albeit one who believes that option unlikely. It will be a striking reminder of the tumultuous chapter of history the two men lived — first together, then so dramatically apart. But it would be wrong to suggest Mulroney focuses often on that ruptured friendship.
Mulroney says — and other friends agree — that he lives, overall, very much in the now. Shortly after moving into their new home, Mulroney and Mila planned a gathering with friends.
The Conservatives only moved after numerous other countries had already done so. Even US sanctions, due to an activist Congress, were tougher than those implemented by Ottawa. To the extent that Mulroney deserves praise it is that he took a more principled position towards the apartheid regime than erstwhile allies London, Israel and Washington. Or, to put it differently, Canada was the best of a bad lot. But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew.
We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent.
Seven years later, the wrath against his party reached biblical proportions. Quebecers hated him for failing to deliver on promised constitutional reforms that would have finally recognized theirs as a distinct society.
And most of the country hated him for introducing the 7 percent goods-and-services tax. Too unpopular to win another term, Mulroney bowed out ahead of the 1993 federal election. He was replaced by Kim Campbell, but anger against him remained.
When the electoral dust settled, the Liberals formed the next government, and the smouldering crater once known as the Progressive Conservative Party was left with two seats. It was the worst defeat in Canadian politics. In 1995, it was revealed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was investigating whether Mulroney accepted kickbacks on the sale of Airbus jets to Air Canada.
And the scandals continue. Yet there is no debating it: Brian Mulroney is back. Hampson achieves that goal effortlessly, detailing how Mulroney backed Commonwealth sanctions in 1986 against South Africa to help bring an end to apartheid, persuaded President George H.
Bush to seek United Nations backing for the 1990 Gulf War, and was a constant campaigner for human rights. Like Rocky Balboa in the movie Creed, Mulroney has been called out of retirement to remind us of his old winning ways. His father toiled as an electrician at the local mill in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, and the family scraped by on his hourly wage.
Mulroney grew up an anglophone Catholic in a francophone town where most English speakers were Protestant—linguistic and religious barriers cast him as an outsider.

Though Mulroney claimed he only peripherally knew Schreiber, evidence later showed that they had several meetings in upscale hotels, involving business transactions with envelopes full of cash. Ultimately, the RCMP ended its investigation without laying charges. While Mulroney apologized for taking money from Schreiber , he was only ever found to have acted inappropriately for an elected official and to have had an inappropriate business relationship with Schreiber. The public later learned that in 1998 Mulroney had met with Schreiber in Zurich to determine if Schreiber possessed any incriminating documents, and that Mulroney had waited until 1999 to declare the payments on his income taxes. Despite these revelations, Mulroney never had to repay the money. Although Canada, under Mulroney, was the first nation in the Anglo-American sphere to declare opposition to apartheid, this was after decades of Canadian support for the apartheid regime. Nelson Mandela recognized Yasser Arafat and Fidel Castro as the leaders most consistently supportive of his struggle against apartheid, not Mulroney. On a 1987 trip to southern Africa, Mulroney bristled at the insinuation the Indigenous population of Canada faced conditions similar to apartheid. When he stepped down, he was genuinely reviled. His legacy largely consists of policies that left Canadians worse off, and he lowered the bar for the Canadian political class as a whole. Mulroney hoodwinked a nation, confident that in the long run Canadians would rather pretend nothing was wrong than admit they had made a terrible mistake. He knew us too well.
