[Top 5] D&D Best Paladin Builds
Corrupted Paladin (Paladin/Warlock 5e multiclass). This build combines the tenacity of the Paladin with the power and versatility of the Warlock for a deadly and fluid combination. A paladin follows a strict code of discipline and devotion. While the archetypal paladin is lawful good, protecting the innocent and the weak, paladins in 5e can be much more varied than this (though certainly do steer towards being protectors).
Paladin Handbook: DnD 5th Edition Class Guide – RPGBOT
Aura of Protection 6th Level : Arguably the signature of the Paladin class, where you add your CHA modifier to all of your saving throws. And if allies are within 10 feet, they get that benefit, too. Aura of Courage 10th Level : Frightened can be quite nasty for a melee combatant, which you are, because it not only invokes disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks, but it also prevents you from moving towards the source of the frightening. Improved Divine Smite 11th Level : Bonus radiant damage every time you hit at no cost. Cleansing Touch 14th Level : Negate a hostile spell on yourself or an ally with your action, with CHA-mod uses per day. Pretty neat ability, if not quite a flat-out game changer. Aura Improvements 18th Level : All those lovely Auras you get Protection, Courage, anything from your Oath expand from 10 feet to 30 feet. Strength is the best for a two-handed attacker, both are viable for dual wielding and sword-and-board fighting styles. Dex: Dexterity is obviously preferable for finese weapons.
Con: Another top tier stat. Hit points are just too important to let slide. Paladins are melee combatants, and more hit points lets them stay in combat for longer and recover more HP with hit dice. If you plan on casting Concentration spells in the middle of combat, you want a decent score here to maintain them when taking damage. It helps that the Paladin is proficient in Wisdom saves. Boost Charisma instead and let Aura of Protection take care of the rest. Defensive bonuses are also useful early though some options may be less effective later. Enlarge gives you advantage on STR checks and saves, plus an extra d4 damage on each attack.
They get Darkvision, advantage against charm and immunity to sleep. Boosted darkvision and Faerie Fire can help in an ongoing underground campaign, and the sunlight sensitivity hurts if you go outside. Maybe you can wear a big fancy hat like Jarlaxxle. The new Fey Step also has a side effect depending on what season you are, which you can change any day you want. Note that Winter is a frightening effect and is thus valuable for Conquest. Using a bonus action you can do a short range teleport that gives you resistance to all damage. A solid defensive option. Relying on at least 3 stats makes this a decent idea but not an incredible one.
Get a head start on your character concept with a feat! The small size but without the benefits of Lucky or the Dex Bonus. Many Paladins will want to consider this, there are even more sub-race options on Half-Elf now similar to the Elf subraces. Perception is a solid choice in any campaign and the other one is up to you. All the positives with none of the downsides. Good deal. Thematically a Fiend Paladin who is resistant to fire like a Blackguard just sounds badass. The Variant Tieflings are a mixed bag..
Hellish Rebuke and Darkness give you some ranged options and utility. Charm person and Entrall based on your Charisma spellcasting modifier are also solid options if used correctly. Hellfire : Replacing the hellish rebuke with burning hands helps your ability to handle some hordes, not a huge change though. Winged: Instead of extra spells you get to fly around when not wearing heavy armour. Darkvision, resistance to necrotic and radiant damage, free Light cantrip and a long-rest recharge, scaled-back version of Lay on Hands that means you can conserve some of your actual Lay on Hands. The rest of the abilities are a bit hap-hazard for a Paladin. A big strong Goliath is similar to a Half-Orc where you get Athletics for free instead of Intimidation. Tabaxi get Darkvision, extra movement, built in weapons, and free proficiency in Stealth and Perception.
The Cha boost helps a bit too. Aside from that, swim speed, breathe water and air, talk to water creatures, and cold resistance. Good all around. Also gets Darkvision, free Stealth proficiency and 2d6 extra damage when attacking from surprise. The Int may be less useful for you though. The Saving-Face ability is great in a big party. The bonus action movement helps with getting into melee range which can sometimes be an issue, darkvision and intimidation are solid pickups. Magic resistance and poison immunity plus darkvision.
A well rounded choice for any Paladin. DEX Paladins could see some real benefits here. Not bad. Heavily armored Paladins can use the Strength bonus. Disguising yourself is a nice trick in more social campaigns. Change your Armour composition during a long rest, resistance to poison and immunity to disease. Navigational skills never hurt anyone either. Also think of the fun creature your Find Steed will create and get more Horns in your arsenal.
At lower levels though, the difference is much more noticeable.
I believe that the Paladin can be built in both ways, even through oaths which are outwardly facing as good. This absolute mindset and devoted nature is why White matches so well with the Paladin. To start off I want to take our core color and add in Red to see what sort of Paladin is bread from these colors influences.
Coloring their view of the world around them, and vengeance can seem like the only outlet for such emotions. Not just vengeance on those who did them wrong, but against all who act with hate towards others. It is an act of violence against those who do wrong to the weak and judgment handed out is this characters only recourse. What I mean is that there are those are acted upon by ruthless external forces who are unable to stand up to such aggressors and the oath of vengeance paladin is there to fill in that role, by being that act of recourse for those unable to do so, placing fear in the heart of those who bring fear to others.
In the case of our White Red character they had felt the hand of an evil force mar their view of the world and vowed that such horrific actions should never go unpunished. They found that the sword, shield and divine magic were tools they could use to enact vengeance on the behalf of others, for those who could not stand up for themselves. They now see themselves as Judge Jury and executioner. This outlook and life have hardened them with an unquenchable resolve.
You see a traumatic experiences at a young age can harden a person and such is the case of this version of the Paladin. One which defines the characters life thereafter. White in this regard is the expression of Judgment and Justice, justice on the behalf of others to weak to stand against the darkness of the world. The issue is that Justice is blind, and can be dished out when it is potentially not appropriate.
This can add a lot of nuance to your character when playing them. Red in this context is the anger which is bread our character and their chosen oath. There is an rage which is inherent in vengeance whether it is justified or not, and this can mare our paladins view of the world. When we create our characters we want them to be complex and faults such as these can bread complexity and lead to moments that some Paladin role-players might be afraid to tread and yet by using the colors present their hand is forced.
As you can already see the Paladin can be dynamic in its motivations when we take a look at what could lead to such oaths and how those could be played out in your campaigns. To do this I want to remove Red and add in Green. Its a desire to kindle the light present in the living, to bring hope into a dark world, and to protect that life at all costs. They see signs in the faces in the flowers, the voice of god in the songs of birds and visions of a better world in the clouds.
Wildhunt: Not useful for Paladin. Strength, a flexible ability score increase, natural armor, AC bonus, and the vigilance to keep watch over a sleeping party. Totally flexible, and lots of great options. Class Features Hit Dice: d10 hit points put you at the top of the hit point game. Weapon Proficiencies: All weapons.
The best kind. Armor Proficiencies: All armor and shields. Tool Proficiencies: None. Lay On Hands: This is the most efficient healing ability in the game. Fighting Style: Paladins get a smaller list of fighting styles than Fighters do, but there are still solid options on the list.
The reroll does not apply to Smite damage dice, making it less useful. If you plan on using two-handed weapons, pick Defense instead to compensate for your lack of a shield. Protection: Tempting, but it only works with adjacent allies. Spellcasting: Paladin spellcasting is a nice mix of defensive buffs and healing. Your Smite spells are unique to your class, and powerful options for your swordsmanship.
Burning spell slots on your Divine Smite is also a great use of spells. Using the Smite spells, such as Searing Smite, Thunderous Smite, and Wrathful Smite can do decent damage with helpful additional effects which may be more situationally useful than the small amount of extra damage that Divine Smite provides. Extra Attack: A second attack doubles your damage output. Cleansing Touch: A great way to un-curse your allies without using a spell slot. The abilities granted are a mix of crowd control options and strong offensive options.
Oath Spells: Most of the spells on this list require a save by the target, so upping your Charisma is mandatory if you plan on using them to their best effect. Hold Person will be unreliable unless you have a really strong Charisma. This might be the level reserved for smites. Dominate beast suffers from the same DC dependence as the previous. Channel Divinity: Both options are excellent.
Guided Strike: This is a really great ability that ensures you hit with an attack, which means you get to smite. Aura of Conquest: You have two ways to cause fear, your channel divinity and the fear spell, both of which require a save DC. If you needed a reason to increase your Charisma, this is it. The ability to lock down terrified enemies can end an encounter or prevent a squad of minions from moving. Scornful Rebuke: Cast Compel Duel on an enemy, and then watch them kill themselves.
More hits coming in means more damage going out. Invincible Conqueror: For 1 minute per day you become an absolute wrecking ball. Oath of Devotion This is the most typical version of a Paladin. It provides a mix of abilities that are intuitive and have a good degree of synergy. Protection from Evil and Good is a very strong buff, especially when used to prevent or control possession and charm effects at low levels, when your party is particularly susceptible to them.
Guardian of Faith is a very strong area control spell. Commune is tricky to use well. Channel Divinity: Two useful options that feel very…paladin-y. Sacred Weapon: Granting yourself a magic weapon for a minute is very useful at low levels, but chances are any magic weapons you find over time will outclass this eventually. Turn the Unholy: Adding turning undead and fiends to your list of abilities is useful for dealing with crowds of monsters.
Purity of Spirit: Protection from Evil and Good is an amazing defensive buff, and having it permanently running without needing to concentrate is spectacular. This also keeps pesky minions off your back, allowing you to save your weapon attacks for the main villain. Unlike the other Sacred Oaths, this one grants abilities that can most easily be used to prevent or end encounters and promote diplomatic avenues. This sacred oath requires you to max out your Charisma as soon as possible, in order to make the best use of your Charisma-based skills and spellcasting, all of which relies on your targets failing the spell save DC. Oath Spells: Your spells are all excellent and on theme.
Calm emotions is a strong area of effect spell, but only works situationally. They give you great resilience. Wall of force is the best wall spell in the game. Channel Divinity: Both options are easy to use and commonly activated. Rebuke the Violent: Great to use against enemy casters, or big monsters who hit hard.
Did they just hurt you? Make them feel your pain. Aura of the Guardian: Being able to soak up damage lets you tank at short range. In case one of your squishier party members accidentally gets hurt, you can soak it for them. Protective Spirit: This makes Aura of the Guardian safer to use and helps keep you alive.
Emissary of Redemption: By being a punching bag, you can take no actions and kill something. Oath of the Ancients Ah, the Nature Paladin. Oath of the Ancients shares a lot of abilities with both Rangers and Druids. It includes abilities that restrain and hinder movement of enemies, which gives you a great degree of battlefield control. Misty Step is a great spell that solves a lot of mobility problems including pits, difficult terrain, walls, and enemies.
Protection From Energy is a mandatory spell for any adventurer going after dragons, elementals, or any higher level caster. Stone Skin is a good buff, but it has an expensive material component. Given that you learn it at 13th-level, many enemies you encounter will have magic attacks. Channel Divinity: Two options that give you decent battlefield control. Aura of Warding: Resistance to spell damage turns you into a safe haven from enemy spellcasters.
You are provided with several abilities to single out foes and taunt them into attacking you over your weaker, more vulnerable allies. Additionally, you are afforded ways to take damage that would otherwise be dealt to your friends and use your large pool of hit points and healing options to soak up damage instead. This gives your healer a more efficient turn, where they only have to heal you with a single spell, rather than taking multiple turns to spread it around. Oath Spells: Crown spells are a mix of useful and useless spells.
D&D 5E Basic Build Series: Paladin
And with a wide variety of features and subclasses, Paladins are also a ton of fun to play in DnD 5e.
Paladin 5e – DnD Class Guide
Level: 1st. Replaces: Detect evil. Benefit: A lightbringer paladin can use this ability at will. This is a divination effect similar to a detect evil spell, except that it finds undead only of any alignment. At the moment the paladin uses the ability, she knows if there are any undead within a chosen 60-degree arc, knows the exact number , and knows their exact location. This ability is the equivalent of a 2nd-level spell. It is a spell-like ability.
Divine Counterspell Although the ability to turn undead is arguably a defining cleric characteristic, some clerics and paladins find that they can be even more effective crusaders by opposing evil spellcasters. The ability to negate an enemy spellcasters magic grants a character an unexpected edge. Class: Cleric or paladin. Level: 1st cleric or 4th paladin. Special Requirement: Knowledge arcana 1 rank. Replaces: You do not gain the ability to turn or rebuke undead.
This ability functions just as if you were using dispel magic to counter the spell, except that you add your cleric level instead of your caster level to the d20 roll. For example, a paladin would normally turn undead as a cleric of three levels lower; her effective cleric level for counterspelling is equal to her paladin level - 3.
Combine them with sentinel and polearm master to make it really tough for enemies to bypass you for softer party members. Much will depend on your fighting approach though.
Two-handed weapons for damage dealers, one handed for tanks with a shield and if you have gone for a finesse build, consider a rapier. Javelins use strength though and are one handed so tend to be the best option. Armor Recommended options: Heavy armor for low dexterity builds full plate when you can afford it , light armor studded leather is best for high dexterity builds. Options to avoid: Make sure your armor matches with your dexterity score.
Medium armor should not be a good option as you should either be dumping dexterity or going all in on it. Add a shield for extra durability at the sacrifice of some damage output. Generally though, a shield is an excellent option for a paladin. Options to avoid: All options are viable depending on your build and no options are bad.
Considerations: Defense is your best option for enhancing your durability. Protector builds will get a decent amount out of interception and protection, but they do rely on more situational circumstances and fighting alongside allies. Blind fighting is even more situational, but great if you can consistently work with your warlock to use darkness against your enemies. Blessed warrior will rarely give you something superior to do with your action unless you intend to take a ranged or out of combat cantrip but tends to be the weaker option.
Multiclassing Recommended options: Bard, Sorceror, Warlock Options to avoid: Barbarian, Rogue Considerations: Bards, sorcerors and warlocks are a great option for getting extra spell slots for casting smites and other paladin spells. All 3 classes all use charisma as their spellcasting ability which works nicely for a paladin. Warlock is probably your best option, especially a hexblade. Bards will give you bardic inspiration, spells and extra skills.
Great if you want to give your paladin a bit more utility outside of combat. Barbarians feel like they could be a good fit, but tend not to work well in heavy armor. Roleplaying a paladin While all paladins are oath-making warriors, they vary hugely in the execution of that archetype, from compassionate protectors to vengeful zealots. You struggle to accept alternative world views and though your intentions may be well meaning, your rigid adherence to your ideals can cause you to misstep at times.
A word of caution, in party dynamics that require some give and take, a zealot can be a frustrating character to play. Try not to block other party members too much and consider a journey of discovery as you learn from your mistakes and adapt your world view.
On one such a mission, after purging a village which had grown infected by the undead they no longer believed in their mission and fell into darkness. Casting off their oath and last bit of humanity. I think a character like this can be tricky to play as it requires utilizing accumulated trauma as a mechanism for your characters decisions, but if you are up for the challenge then there is some amazing role-playing moments you can conjure up. In a rare case for our supplementary character designs I went with a mono color and one that opposes our core color. This choice was very deliberate. With White being a color of collective responsibility and justice, while Black is instead the color of individualism and moral relativism. Where White places its purpose into the hands of a higher ideal, Black places its purpose solely with itself and its own desires. So in this way they shed their oath which bound them to a higher ideal, an ideal they found to be a lie and in this way cast their trust completely into their own hands.
Now of course the rejection came with a steep price, they now push back fully against everything that their previous oath stood for and have become something of a villain themselves. CONCLUSION Now that we have built a few characters lets discuss each of the colors and how they can be used in relation to the paladin, that way you can mix and match to create your own. Ah yes that thing I told you to abandon in place of the color pie, well it does have its uses and I think I can illustrate something by doing so. At the heart of every Paladin is the core alignment of Lawful, something you could hardly escape, because in many ways an oath is a law you have set to be the focus of your life. Now of all of the colors there is one who applies to lawful the most, and that would be white. So just in the same way you would make your Paladin almost always lawful with some combination of good, neutral, or evil its the same with White. Place White at the heart of your paladin and then add colors on top of it to drive its motivation further. Speaking of other colors what about the one color missing in all of the examples so far, Blue. In the case of the Blue paladin we would be talking about a more logical view of Justice rather than one based in morality. Its a logical path to a better world, something we talk about when discussing what values Blue and White share.
Then we have Black. This color often will reject an oath in that an oath to uphold the ideals of someone else goes against Blacks wish to focus on ones own needs, it can have trouble doing things for others unless they truly believe in it themselves. In another way Black can be used to add a layer of ruthlessness to a Paladin who does follow an oath and can have dire consequences, as their actions would be total and unwavering. The next color is one I could see you using pretty often for the Paladin and that is Red, as Red adds a level of fanaticism to any color it is paired with. The oath becomes more than the sum of its parts, it becomes a total identity in the presence of Red.
