In addition to performing in live theatre, Seldes began acting in television in 1952 in a Hallmark Hall of Fame production that marked the first of many guest star roles. She also performed in a number of motion pictures and in radio plays. She has a daughter, Katharine, by her first marriage to Julian Claman. They were divorced in 1961.
Her reliability and professionalism sealed her place in the Guinness World Records for a time after playing every performance during the run of Deathtrap from 1978-82, a total of 1,809 performances. The record has since been broken by Catherine Russell, who logged more than 11,000 performances in the off-Broadway production of Perfect Crime. The daughter of the author and critic Gilbert Seldes, she studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse in her native New York and made her professional debut at the age of 17.
She made her Broadway debut in 1947 in the Robinson Jeffers adaptation of Medea. In 2010, she received the prestigious Tony Lifetime Achievement Award. She is survived by daughter Katharine Claman Andres, her only child with first husband Julian Claman.
