Этот фильм по-настоящему смешной, как может быть смешным настоящий английский юмор. Тут можно вспомнить комедии Оскара Уайльда.
И как бы не пытались наши телевизионные каналы трансформировать чувство юмора современного обывателя, здравый смысл и мистер Шоу всё равно победят.

Higgins boasts to his colleague Colonel George Pickering Scott Sunderland that with three to six months of training he can pass Eliza off as a duchess. The next morning she shows up at his doorstep, reluctantly willing to undergo the transformation. Soon her father Alfred Wilfrid Lawson appears, looking for a few pounds in return for giving up his daughter. With intensive effort Eliza makes progress, and Higgins introduces her to his mother Marie Lohr while local gentleman Freddy David Tree falls in love with Eliza at first sight. The big test looms at a gala event hosted by the Ambassador of Transylvania.
That is her ambition. Higgins quickly gets his own, grander ideas. He wagers with Sutherland that he can pass her off as a duchess at an ambassadorial reception within three to six months, dependent upon her work ethic. Eliza is bullied into acceptance. Her own father virtually sells her to Higgins, and that is that.
The film uses montages, innovative in its time, to show this process. There is a rather hilarious reveal of their work when Eliza attends a tea party and, with a near perfect proper accent, makes inappropriate small talk in street slang. The disconnect between delivery and content is very amusing. After the rather botched tea party, Higgins and Eliza work some more and still some more — montage after montage — until she is ready for the big reveal. Is she now Cinderella?
Can she pass as a duchess at the Transylvania ambassadorial ball? Yes, yes, she can. Eliza is irrevocably isolated from her roots, scared. The bet is over, and —object that she is to Higgins — she can now be cruelly and heartlessly discarded back into the gutter. Now the gloves are off, and the slippers are thrown.
The rat-a-tat interchanges here, as Eliza and Higgins hash it out, is verbal foreplay at the highest level. I just cannot explain how gloriously pleasurable it is to watch these igniting exchanges. Shaw eschewed any romantic ending for Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle.
And, further, he was a phoneticist and scholar of the English language—particularly its abuse and shortcomings; he invented an enlarged phonemic alphabet of forty-eight letters that reconciled English spelling with English pronunciation. Scott as the rambunctious general. Rex Harrison, who had performed the role on Broadway with Andrews, would appear in the film as well. But in the 1938 movie, the Hungarian producer Gabriel Pascal had an equally competent actor for the Higgins character in Leslie Howard. Here, of course, he never sings a note. Reflecting the small, often tightly knit and overlapping world of filmdom, the cinematographer of Pygmalion, Harry Stradling, would, twenty-five years later, win an Oscar for photographing My Fair Lady, and his camera man in Pygmalion, Jack Hildyard, would win an Oscar for The Bridge on the River Kwai.

The other performances are of a very high standard. Asquith does an excellent job of opening up the story so it does not seem unnecessarily stagey. I had a smile on my face throughout. Very warmly recommended.
Can our beauty transform this beast? It is a nuanced and impressive performance. And Wendy Hiller is equally nuanced and impressive in her portrayal of Eliza Doolittle. They both do. It is truly a tour de force and an absolute pleasure to behold. Pygmalion is breathlessly and brutally brilliant. It raises all sorts of questions about nature versus nurture, about class and morality, about misogyny and what it is to be a woman, about notions of the self, and about the nature and aspects of love. Seriously, I do not know how it is that I went 42 years on this planet without ever having seen this film. And I have now become something of a major fangirl of Leslie Howard. Be still, my 42-year-old heart, but that man is fine. See it. Pygmalion may be nearing 80, it may be black and white, but its brilliance and its beauty are timeless. But Pygmalion is not a comedy for straight faces, and anyone who puts one on at the Astor should have his theater-going credentials examined and his sense of humor sent off for repairs.
