That was by design, as the slasher shares a connection to one of the cult-favorite films in the franchise. Instead, it was an anthology story about an evil mask maker named Conal Cochran, who planned on using his Halloween masks to kill the children of the world and bring Halloween back to its medieval roots.
The 1982 film not having Michael is the reason why fans and critics panned it at the time. However, now this creepy psychological thriller is rightfully regarded as one of the best in the franchise. The story shares DNA with Season of the Witch with its slow burn mystery pacing, focus on a new central character, and like that cult classic film, Ends allows the horror to breathe by having the story span about a week leading up to Halloween night.

I stayed with EEG on his second directorial project, which was Brainstorm. Towards the end of that production, we went to work on the main titles. Most productions would contract an outside designer or title company to do this kind of work, but since EEG had both a wealth of talent and equipment, and since Doug has a strong design sense and knew exactly what he wanted, he decided to do the titles in-house. As the film opens, the machine is on the verge of working properly, but still has some problems. Brainstorm — opening title sequence Doug wanted the film to open with a POV of that slate — initially distorted, then popping into perfect clarity as the team made adjustments. And this distorted view of the slate formed the background for the main titles. We ended up with a lot of raw footage from which I picked the most interesting elements.
Finally, the titles themselves were added. They were physical, three-dimensional plastic letters mounted on glass, shot with an extreme fisheye lens, both frontlit and backlit, to create a matte to superimpose the titles over the background. One consistent element to the background was a stately clockwise rotation of all the elements, which, when combined with the non-rotating title cards, gives the sequence an effect of vertigo. Woody Allen most often uses a series of title cards — white type on a black screen — which I think is fine.
Beyond that, a title sequence should artfully introduce the audience to the main motifs in the film, much as a well-composed operatic overture would do, in introducing the major musical themes used in the body of the opera. What are your feelings on how title sequences have changed over the last 20 years? Obviously, a big budget, VFX-driven film must have a big budget, high concept title sequence — a calling card. At times, the film that follows is undeserving of — or unrelated to — its calling card.
You just know most, if not all, of those kids are going to die that night. The fact that at the end, Conal probably succeeded when you consider the Fridge Logic. The commercial was set to air around the U. The novelization of the film pulls no punches, the last paragraph of the entire book says that the plan worked.
Conal Cochran himself manages to be more horrifying than his own robots. The amused way he talks about murdering millions upon millions of children as the best kind of joke on them. His lecture on Halloween and what he feels it actually is is equally chilling.
As the kid falls dead, a huge swarm of snakes and insects is released from what was his mouth, which eventually kill Buddy and his wife. It gets even worse if you are one of those that read the novelization.
The novel goes into graphic detail as to what is happening in that mask; for example, Little Buddy is unable to scream because his larynx had already rotted away. The things released from the masks are venomous insects and snakes; harmless crickets and garter snakes stand in for most of them in the movie. And when all is said and done? Cochran laughs, not an Evil Laugh but one of genuine mirth, like murdering a family with black magic was just another of his practical jokes. The sequence of all those kids throughout America on Halloween, buying and wearing Silver Shamrock masks as company vans drive through neighborhoods reminding them about "the big giveaway.
