Golden Knights among winners, Rangers among losers from the 2017 draft weekend
Swiss star Nico Hischier of the Halifax Mooseheads in the Quebec League is both smart and skilled enough to go first overall, as he led all CHL rookies in scoring and carried a thin roster to the postseason. Playing center with a wiry frame is perfectly normal in major junior, but Hischier will need to fill out before competing and succeeding against the bigger pivots in the NHL. The biggest riser in the first round is a kid who continued to prove me wrong all season. It may seem as though sublime defender Cale Makar from the Brooks Bandits is simply a flavor-of-the-month kind of prospect because of the way he crushed a lesser-known league like the Alberta Junior Hockey League. It took a while, but I finally realized that questioning the level his competition, or his choosing to attend UMass-Amherst over bigger, tougher NCAA programs, is nitpicking at its finest. But times are changing, and the Big Leagues are desperately promoting speed and skill, two things Makar has in spades. Klim Kostin was a favorite player of mine in the preseason, but his draft year was as incomplete as they come. He followed up a dominant Ivan Hlinka tournament with a promotion to the KHL — a rarity for pre-draft teenagers.
He would go on to play in all 82 games while consistently playing well north of 20 minutes per games as a 19 year old.
Miro would go on to finish fourth in Calder voting that season behind eventual Calder Memorial winner Elias Petterson, 2019 Stanley Cup winner Jordon Binnington, and 2018 first overall pick Rasmus Dahlin. In 150 career NHL games, Heiskanen as amassed 20 goals and 68 points in 150 regular season games played and will be a stalwart on the Dallas blue line for many years to come. Out of the top five players selected in this draft, Makar was the only one who played NCAA where he tallied 21 goals and 70 points in 75 games played for the University of Massachusetts. Makar also led his team in scoring as a defenseman in 2018-19 and would go on to win the Hobey Baker award, the first in the history for the school. Makar had a more than unique breakout with the Avs as he was called up to play for the team in the 2018-19 playoffs, where he adapted almost immediately, registering a goal and six points in 10 playoff games, cementing himself undoubtedly into the Avalanche roster for years to come.
He owns a hard, accurate shot, thrives in the slot on the power play and is a strong skater for his size. Does he project more as a 3C at the NHL level or can he be the top-six unicorn center teams often dream about but can never find? He owns a big one-timer on the power play and a hard, accurate wrist shot that can solve goalies from far out.
His season was beset by mono and he was also traded part way through in search of more ice time. Originally considered a surefire top three pick early in the season, he could go anywhere from 5-20 in the draft. Skating wise, he has great power in his stride and beats many junior-level players with ease. Offensively, he mostly stays away from the big load ups from the point, more often than not opting for an efficient approach focused on getting shots through to the net. He tore apart the U18s with six goals and 13 points in seven games and chipped in a couple of points at the World Juniors as a 17-year-old. Scouts describe a great deal of inconsistency to his game.

This is one of my bigger misses ever. But he has handled it extremely well. The offensive tools are always going to be there. His defensive game and strength, particularly after all of the time he missed, took a little longer to adjust to the AHL. But he really began to hit his stride in the back half of this season, with 11 points in his last 13 AHL games. He may struggle to reach his ceiling on an Avalanche team that already has Makar and Samuel Girard as offensive options on the blue line, with Bowen Byram on the way, but I still think he has the other tools he needs to be a regular contributor on a contending team. I was a big fan in his draft year, even as he battled mono and things got away from him a little. And while his defensive game and decision making once his biggest weaknesses have become strengths since then, I have grown increasingly concerned with his skating. It could limit his obvious upside as a result.

I fully expect him to become an impact option in the middle-six for the Stars at even strength while helping out on one of the power-play units. Whether you qualify my ranking in 2017 as a success probably depends on how you measure it. My board had more wins and fewer misses than the actual draft order, by a margin of 16-13 wins and 8-10 misses. Big, highly-skilled, and ultra competitive, Vilardi brings plenty of meat to the plate - but the skating has raised concerns about how impactful an NHLer he can be. The fifth-ranked prospect is Casey Mittelstadt, the top American-born player.
He is incredibly efficient at stunting offense with his body and stick. The Stars will be content having picked Heiskanen third. He is a terrific playmaker — he ranked 10th in assists-per-60 last season — and his tireless work ethic makes him difficult to play against. He never stops competing, winning pucks and generating chances for his teammates.
He has shown some flair this season, too. Passing by Robert Thomas has been so nice this season pic. He has an elusive release and picks corners with ease. He should feast on weak matchups as a second-line center this year. In his final year of junior, he carried the Guelph Storm to the Memorial Cup with 42 points in 24 playoff games. In the NHL, he has continued to produce at an impressive rate and has shown he can run a powerplay. Some have given up on him, but if he remains healthy he can still reach his potential.
His frame means he can win pick battles and maintain possession, and his quick hands and creativity mean he can create chances. He is just as good as a setup man or a finisher. If he can round out his game and start to make the simple plays more consistently, he may end up higher on this list. However, the players above him have been more effective thus far. Standing at six-foot-three, 200 pounds, he is most effective below the hash marks where he can dictate play with his size, shot and vision. He also possesses a powerful release, making him a well-rounded threat. This season we will see whether or not Vilardi can fully recover from the injuries that have plagued his career thus far.
He plays a simple but highly effective game, using his slick hands to carry the puck into vantage points where he can beat the goalie himself with or find a teammate with ease.
