Pygmalion has its basis in a Greek legend wherein a misogynistic sculptor-king of Cyprus fell in love with his own statue of Aphrodite. The story was recycled in various literary and dramatic forms before George Bernard Shaw brought it lasting fame in his 1913 stage play. Oddly enough, when Hollywood Oscars were awarded, Pygmalion copped all the screenwriting awards. Shaw had already seen her onstage as Eliza Doolittle in the Shaw Festival at Malvern, and was so impressed that he recommended her to Pascal.
Anthony Asquith, who shared billing with his associate director and star, Leslie Howard, had not had a good film for several years. But Pygmalion placed him firmly in the front rank of British directors for his brilliant handling of this delicately satirical material.
It is a nuanced and impressive performance. And Wendy Hiller is equally nuanced and impressive in her portrayal of Eliza Doolittle. They both do. It is truly a tour de force and an absolute pleasure to behold.
Pygmalion is breathlessly and brutally brilliant. It raises all sorts of questions about nature versus nurture, about class and morality, about misogyny and what it is to be a woman, about notions of the self, and about the nature and aspects of love. Seriously, I do not know how it is that I went 42 years on this planet without ever having seen this film. And I have now become something of a major fangirl of Leslie Howard. Be still, my 42-year-old heart, but that man is fine. See it.
Pygmalion may be nearing 80, it may be black and white, but its brilliance and its beauty are timeless. His story of a modern Pygmalion, a phonetics expert named Henry Higgins, who molds the common clay of Eliza Doolittle, cockney flower girl, into a personage fit to meet an Archduchess at an embassy ball, has been deftly, joyously told upon the screen. That instinct for comedy might have been expected of a Higgins by Leslie Howard, or a dustman by Wilfrid Lawson, or a Mrs. Higgins by Marie Lohr.
It comes almost more satisfyingly, since unexpected, in the magnificent Eliza of Wendy Hiller. Miss Hiller is a Discovery. She deserves the capital. We cannot believe that even Mr. Eliza is the bedraggled cabbage leaf gruff Professor Higgins takes into his home, feeds, clothes, batches by proxy, of course , and teaches so that she can pass for a gentlewoman at the embassy ball and thereby win his wager.

The story of Professor Higgins and his pupil Eliza has become so well-known during the past hundred years that it barely requires an introduction.
But just to be on the safe side, the film begins as one Colonel Pickering, returning to England, comes across Professor Henry Higgins an expert in dialects and phonetic variations as the latter is taking notes on the speech of a flower girl. The two fast become friends, and enter a bet that Higgins could teach the cockney-speaking girl to pass for a well-bred lady, just by teaching her manners and good pronunciation. This he sets out to do with great determination. The film for the most part stays very close to the original play.
For Berkeley Square, this in 1934, Howard received his first Oscar nomination, and, in 1938, a second for Pygmalion, both unsuccessful.
If he had already, pre-Pygmalion, proven himself to be no slouch, Wendy Hiller, Oscar-nominated for her role as Eliza, would shine equally well in her second screen appearance—and throughout a distinguished film career that would include another Shaw play, Major Barbara. Reflecting the small, often tightly knit and overlapping world of filmdom, the cinematographer of Pygmalion, Harry Stradling, would, twenty-five years later, win an Oscar for photographing My Fair Lady, and his camera man in Pygmalion, Jack Hildyard, would win an Oscar for The Bridge on the River Kwai. Cathleen Nesbitt, Leo Genn and Anthony Quayle appear in uncredited roles, and Patrick Macnee makes his first screen appearance, also uncredited. French composer Arthur Honegger wrote a rather interesting score, although its effectiveness is diluted by the poor sound. The film begins with a cockney flower girl Hiller wandering through Covent Garden with her wares and coming upon a church as the worshippers are leaving.
Professor Henry Higgins Howard has been eavesdropping on the people around him, making phonetic notations in a notepad. He overhears Eliza and, by her speech, is able to identify where she lives within a few streets. Remember that.
Vintage Film Review: The Timeless Brilliance of Pygmalion (1938)
It might be contemporaray London or the one of a few decades ago. Asquith is a dab hand at adaptations from the theatre, and knows when to leave something alone and when to zhuzz it up a bit — see his The Importance of Being Earnest. Wilfrid Lawson plays her grasping but philosophical father with a roguish gleam in his eye, David Tree is perfect as the silly posh chap who falls for the refined Eliza. Shaw was an Irishman and his play examines and gently satirises the codes of the British class system. In doing so he poses himself a question as the film progresses.

I just cannot explain how gloriously pleasurable it is to watch these igniting exchanges. Shaw eschewed any romantic ending for Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle. But the movie adaptation is, mercifully, a wee bit more ambiguous for us romantics at heart, who dare to believe that even the staid and sardonic old bachelor can change, can drop his airs of practiced indifference, be vulnerable, express earnestness and kindness on occasion, instead of always hiding behind a shield of irony and wryness. Can our beauty transform this beast?

Leslie Howard makes a splendid Henry Higgins but the real revelation is Wendy Hiller in her second film. With Hiller, Eliza is keeping her Cockney soul under check at all times whereas Audrey Hepburn always seems to me as a born princess struggling to escape her flower girl disguise. The other performances are of a very high standard. Asquith does an excellent job of opening up the story so it does not seem unnecessarily stagey.
