Paladin 5e Class Guide for Dungeons and Dragons

Spellcasting — Spellcasting is a hugely important piece of the Paladin class, and adds to your versatility and effectiveness beyond the simple damage increase from Divine Smite. Spells Prepared 1st Level: bless, command, shield of faith, wrathful smite.

Command — A good control spell that can force an enemy to spend its turn doing something advantageous to you. For example: Command a creature in melee with you to flee to cause it to provoke opportunity attacks from you and any allies in melee with it. This was confirmed to not violate the restrictions for Command in Sage Advice. Command a flying creature to grovel to ground it.

Command a creature in melee with you to drop its weapons, and pick them up using your Object Interaction, effectively disarming them. Command a creature to halt to keep it still but not give ranged characters disadvantage. Shield of faith — A solid buff spell that increases AC by 2 and only takes a bonus action to cast. Bless is usually better, but sometimes you want this.

For such a low level spell, this effect is very powerful, and can severely hinder the large number of monsters who rely on attacks and are crippled by being frightened. However, this costs concentration both before and after the strike. Sacred Oath — Oath of Devotion. In encounters against these creature types, this is very handy.

If you are about to short rest and have an unspent Channel Divinity, you can recover a slot for no cost.

This gives your healer a more efficient turn, where they only have to heal you with a single spell, rather than taking multiple turns to spread it around. Oath Spells: Crown spells are a mix of useful and useless spells. Some of these spells are going to be used constantly, others are going to be converted into smites. Command is somewhat less useful. Warding Bond is a great way to ensure a squishy character stays alive, shunting damage they would take to you instead. Zone of Truth is very situational.

Spirit Guardians a strong effect, but useless on ranged foes unless you spend your time chasing them around. Guardian of Faith is one of the best area control options available to you. Geas is usually less useful than killing something outright, but plays into your good-alignment sensibilities, and grants you some depth and could ultimately add a fun twist to the plot. Champion Challenge: Taunt effects are rare in 5e, and this one hits a wide area. Turn the Tide: A small amount of AoE healing is great in combination with your Lay on Hands ability, giving you even more utility as a support character. Divine Allegiance: Another way to redirect damage to yourself, giving your healing a single target. Exalted Champion: Unlike most other Paladin Oath capstone abilities, this one lasts for 1 hour instead of 1 minute.

While less overtly powerful offensively, you gain a great defensive buff that extends to your allies, keeping everyone in it until the end, while making your whole team exceptionally difficult to kill. It provides you all the skillsof a great athlete and allows you to excel in combat. This Oath emphasizes your physical attributes while downplaying your spellcasting and diplomatic skills. Peerless Athlete: Activating this as a bonus action is a huge asset, you can pop it before trying to make a shove against an enemy. Inspiring Smite: Healing on demand for yourself and others. The radius increase at 18th level is nice, but again, too little too late. Glorious Defense: This is a really solid defensive ability.

Use a reach weapon, profit. The fact that it only lasts for one minute means you need to use it wisely. Oath of Vengeance This Paladin build is the most offensive, attack-focused style of play, and will maximize the damage you deal while leaving healing and support primarily to the Cleric. It does well in tandem with another melee character to grans flanking bonuses, or a battlefield control caster to funnel enemies towards the pointy end. Dimension Door is just a longer- range Misty Step. Scrying is situational. Channel Divinity: One bad option and one perfect option make your choice on which to use easy.

This is the bad option. Vow of Enmity: Here we go! Starting a boss fight? You have advantage against him. Relentless Avenger: Slower enemies will have a hard time getting away from you. Consider taking Polearm Master to further increase your threat radius and keep chasing them down. Soul of Vengeance: An extra attack each round against your target of Vow of Enmity greatly increases your damage output.

Avenging Angel: Flight for an hour a day is pretty rad. The fear aura will hold lesser foes at bay while you take on the big bad, preventing you from being swarmed. All the abilities are great, but only apply in certain situations. If your campaign setting calls for it, this is one of the strongest paladin subclasses. However, in a vacuum when compared to the others, it underperforms. Oath Spells: A wide variety of spells that are mostly situational or overlap with other party roles. Ahead of a fight with casters, this is a solid buff, but otherwise it wastes an action you would otherwise use smiting.

Abjure the Extraplanar: Situational. Aura of the Sentinel: An initiative boost for entering combat in tight formation. Vigilant Rebuke: Situational. Good against some casters. This Sacred Oath is more important for villainous archetypes than the others and gives an evil-aligned campaign a solid tank option. Oathbreaker paladins are free to pursue dark goals, or accompany some more roguish characters, such as a party of warlocks, bards, and rogues, on adventures. Oath Spells: Some of the options are bad and will never be used, but there are a few gems on this list.

Go from being outnumbered to an overwhelming force in the blink of an eye. As long as you have the materials prepared ahead of time, your reinforcements can arrive when you most need them. Use it to animate a dead body to kill enemies and animate them tomorrow for a never-ending cycle. Confusion is unreliable compared to other single-target enchantment spells like Hold Person, given the randomness of its effect. Touch a target in a crowd and watch them deteriorate before confronting them for the kill. Dominate Person is a powerful way to temporarily gain an extra party member. Control Undead is on theme, but less relevant.

Control Undead: Rather than turning undead, you can redirect them. This only works on minor threats, however, as any serious undead threat is going to be too powerful for you to control. Putting a swath of creatures into a frightened panic in your presence allows your allies to mop them up relatively easily. The damage bonus will stack considerably. Supernatural Resistance: Resistance to nonmagical damage makes you very difficult to kill when facing down minor enemies. Dread Lord: This ability does a ton of damage. Using it in conjunction with your channel divinity will allow you to chase enemies down and cause psychic damage to them, get an extra attack, and also take your normal attack.

Animal Handling: Nature paladins and those who engage in mounted combat should grab this skill when available. Arcana: Divine casters usually take Religion over Arcana. Athletics: Strength is one of your main stats. Deception: Paladins are straight-talking Lawful Good guys, but they do have Charisma as a main stat… History: Not terribly important Insight: The one Wisdom skill you should concern yourself with. Intimidation: Another great Charisma skill for you. Investigation: Not your strong suit. Perception: Spot enemies sneaking up on you.

Purity of Spirit: Lv. Aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead will always have disadvantage on attack rolls against you. The benefits of this will definitely be felt against hordes of weaker enemies of these types.

Holy Nimbus: Lv. Great against hordes of enemies, morse specifically hordes of undead or fiends who are vulnerable to radiant damage. Does not count as a spell, and does not require a saving throw, it just does damage.

The advantage on saving throws is a nice addition. Consider the nature-themed Oath that gives you bonuses against Fey creatures. The Oath of the Ancients sees you protected from Magic damage from spells along with some great defensive utility options.

If your campaign sees you fighting mages or wandering through the Feywild then this could be a strong choice. Not off to a strong start, using your action to restrainin is nice but the range is short. Turn the Faithless: Lv.

Can also help you pick off one at a time while holding the others at bay. Druid may look askance at you for borrowing from their spell list here. Moonbeam and Ice Storm, in particular, are viable anti-horde tools.

Aura of Warding: Lv. Cuts all damage from spells against you and allies in your aura in half! Undying Sentinel: Lv.

Elder Champion: Lv. Become the avatar of the forest and regain some health every turn. Takes the action to cast Elder champion, but with forewarning you may be able to trigger it before battle.

The Oath of Vengeance is all about dishing out incredible damage to one target at a time. Find the biggest, baddest target you can find, sear Vengeance upon them and go to town. Abjure Enemy: Lv.

Target a creature and tell it to wait right there. Vow of Enmity: Lv. Get close to the biggest bad and utter your Vow as a bonus aciton.

This power gives you advantage against this creature for a full minute. This power, activated as a bonus action, gives you advantage no ifs ands or buts , against the enemy you target. Later features key of this incredibly well also.

All of your Oath spells reinforce your ability to inflict incredible damage on one target. Either by incapacitating your target so you can get close or holding one enemy off so you can focus your Enmity target. Relentless Avenger: Lv.

A great tool to pursue and get in front of a fleeing enemy so that they must move past you again. Potentially useful with Sentinel and Polearm Master. Soul of Vengeance: Lv.

Any time your Vow of Enmity target makes an attack you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against it. Avenging Angel: Lv. The Vengeance capstone; for 1 hour you gain 60 ft.

The flight speed for 1 hour is great, but somewhat late. The Aura of Menace makes every creature that starts or enters the 30ft aura make a Wisdom save or be frightened for 1 minute. Float into a room and fill everything with dread.

A lot of your kit lets you direct damage and attacks to yourself so that your allies can get stuff done. Champion Challenge: Lv. You can prevent melee enemies attacking allies by standing apart, the problem then comes from allies wanting to be close for your aura.

Turn the Tide: Lv. Fair to have on hand for emergencies, if nothing else. All but two of these are already on the Paladin spell list, however: Spirit Guardians, and Warding Bond are fantastic spells to boost the power you have.

And it should be noted that even the redundant Paladin spells on this Oath list are still at least good or even great spells e. Command, Aura of Vitality, Banishment. Divine Allegiance: Lv.

Take damage that would otherwise go to an ally within 5 ft of you. Unfortunately, it can only be done once per round since it uses your reaction, making it sharply less effective in a fight with multiple enemies or against multiattacking bosses. Unyielding Spirit: Lv.

Advantage on your saves against two of the most devastating conditions in the game, paralyzed and stunned. Exalted Champion: Lv. For a full hour you get resistance to all non-magical weapons which is still has an impact at the top levels.

The person to bring the correct law is of course you.

Paladin Handbook: DnD 5th Edition Class Guide – RPGBOT

Wizards of the Coast recently unveiled the latest One D&D playtest update, with major changes to the Druid and Paladin classes.

Additional spells revolve around manipulating others. When the opponents will resists your fright, you want to have a wealth of tools to play with their resilience. If the intimidation skill is the first thing that intrigues you in this game, then you should be picking this oath. Advertisements Oath of Redemption XG Ogier the Dane — French Folklore Theme: Deceptively peaceful, the redemption paladin has the ability to completely shut down violence confrontations, either by magical coercion or sheer strength. Game Mechanics: Various utility spells assist in stopping combat abilities. This paladin gets the ability to have a long period of time with charisma bonuses. But, if it comes to combat, they can take the damage dealt by their opponents and deal it right back at them. At later levels, you will be able to take damage intended for your allies, heal yourself at every turn, and ultimately have resistance to all damage. Play-style: A stark contrast from the paladin of conquest, you enjoy the diplomacy and interrogation of others. To you, violence and physical confrontation means failure. However, if you do need to defend your friends, you want to see yourself as the equal and opposing force to the enemy. People are just obstacles to be dismissed from your path of dominance. Game Mechanics: Additional spells have a heavy focus on attacking and animating the dead. They can emit an aura of fear to turn opponents. At later levels, the oathbreaker can deal additional melee damage, granting this bonus to their allies ie. At higher levels, the oathbreaker gains resistance to some forms of damage and, within a powerful aura, can cause a growing darkness to surround them and harm those that dare to try and attack. Play-style: Although intended as a villainous class to use the undead to attack enemies, a player may be able to focus more on the element of utilizing the dead as allies in fighting for good.

In the case of our White Red character they had felt the hand of an evil force mar their view of the world and vowed that such horrific actions should never go unpunished. They found that the sword, shield and divine magic were tools they could use to enact vengeance on the behalf of others, for those who could not stand up for themselves. They now see themselves as Judge Jury and executioner. This outlook and life have hardened them with an unquenchable resolve. You see a traumatic experiences at a young age can harden a person and such is the case of this version of the Paladin. One which defines the characters life thereafter. White in this regard is the expression of Judgment and Justice, justice on the behalf of others to weak to stand against the darkness of the world. The issue is that Justice is blind, and can be dished out when it is potentially not appropriate. This can add a lot of nuance to your character when playing them. Red in this context is the anger which is bread our character and their chosen oath. There is an rage which is inherent in vengeance whether it is justified or not, and this can mare our paladins view of the world. When we create our characters we want them to be complex and faults such as these can bread complexity and lead to moments that some Paladin role-players might be afraid to tread and yet by using the colors present their hand is forced. As you can already see the Paladin can be dynamic in its motivations when we take a look at what could lead to such oaths and how those could be played out in your campaigns. To do this I want to remove Red and add in Green. Its a desire to kindle the light present in the living, to bring hope into a dark world, and to protect that life at all costs. They see signs in the faces in the flowers, the voice of god in the songs of birds and visions of a better world in the clouds. This character, one day overwhelmed by what they saw, had an epiphany, it was them who was destined to stand as a shepherd for life. It was their calling to be the one who would take a strong position against the cosmic chaos which aims to break this perfection, and it was on this day they took the oath of the ancients and set their lot in with this order of Paladins. Taking their sword which once was no more than a lump of sharpened steel and presented it up high with purpose. If we look to the intersection between Green and White we will find ideals such as the upholding of life and tradition to be shared. White will do what it can to stand against darkness and to defend that which cannot defend itself, while Green wishes to see things grow and appreciates the beauty found in all things. This ancient oath is one which has been upheld by paladins for as far back as the first elves. The Fey or Green Knight has always stood for the land and its people and because of this tradition is a strong feature in this version of the paladin.

DnD 5. История знакомства. Нам не страшен паладин

The weapon must have the two-handed or versatile property for you to gain this benefit. Protection When a creature you can see attacks a target other than you that is within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll. You must be wielding a shield. The extra damage is 2d8 for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 5d8. The damage increases by 1d8 if the target is a celestial, good aligned dragon or a fey, to a maximum of 6d8. By 3rd level, the unholy magic flowing through you makes you immune to disease. Ability Score Improvement[ edit ] When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. Extra Attack[ edit ] Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. Aura of Vulnerability[ edit ] Starting at 6th level, whenever a hostile creature within 10 feet of you must make a saving throw, the creature gains a penalty to the saving throw equal to your Charisma modifier with a minimum penalty of -1.

You must be conscious to grant this penalty. At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 45 feet. Aura of Cowardice[ edit ] Starting at 10th level, hostile creatures that start their turns within 10 feet of you have disadvantage on their saving throws against the frightened condition, and creatures immune to this condition lose their immunity while inside the aura. Improved Unholy Smite[ edit ] By 11th level, you are so imbued with profane power that all your melee weapon strikes carry negative energy with them. Whenever you hit a creature with a melee weapon, the creature takes an extra 1d10 necrotic damage.

Medium armor should not be a good option as you should either be dumping dexterity or going all in on it. Add a shield for extra durability at the sacrifice of some damage output. Generally though, a shield is an excellent option for a paladin. Options to avoid: All options are viable depending on your build and no options are bad. Considerations: Defense is your best option for enhancing your durability. Protector builds will get a decent amount out of interception and protection, but they do rely on more situational circumstances and fighting alongside allies. Blind fighting is even more situational, but great if you can consistently work with your warlock to use darkness against your enemies. Blessed warrior will rarely give you something superior to do with your action unless you intend to take a ranged or out of combat cantrip but tends to be the weaker option. Multiclassing Recommended options: Bard, Sorceror, Warlock Options to avoid: Barbarian, Rogue Considerations: Bards, sorcerors and warlocks are a great option for getting extra spell slots for casting smites and other paladin spells. All 3 classes all use charisma as their spellcasting ability which works nicely for a paladin. Warlock is probably your best option, especially a hexblade. Bards will give you bardic inspiration, spells and extra skills. Great if you want to give your paladin a bit more utility outside of combat. Barbarians feel like they could be a good fit, but tend not to work well in heavy armor. Roleplaying a paladin While all paladins are oath-making warriors, they vary hugely in the execution of that archetype, from compassionate protectors to vengeful zealots. You struggle to accept alternative world views and though your intentions may be well meaning, your rigid adherence to your ideals can cause you to misstep at times. A word of caution, in party dynamics that require some give and take, a zealot can be a frustrating character to play. Try not to block other party members too much and consider a journey of discovery as you learn from your mistakes and adapt your world view. You seek redemption through your paladin order, leading a rigid and moral life to counteract your failures and ensure you remain on the path of redemption. The protector: You see suffering all around and seek to aid the helpless in whatever way possible. You can barely pass a beggar without tossing a few copper coins. You will never allow evil to operate in your midst, with your own life being an acceptable cost for the protection of others. The oathbreaker: These types of paladins can vary a lot. Some may completely denounce their oaths and order and choose a path of evil or extremism.

This Oath takes Lawfulness to the extreme, arguably to the point of tyranny. Overall, this Oath is a lot more about control and lockdown than it is outright damage. Conquering Presence: Lv. Frighten each creature within 30ft of you as an action. This is already strong but gets better as more features key off the frightened condition. Good tool for controlling a horde of enemies. Guided Strike: Lv. Great when paired with an active Wrathful Smite to get a better chance at triggering frightened. There are some solid additions to your Paladin arsenal here. At 9th level you come online with Fear, but at all levels there are an excellent thematic mix of defense armor of Agathys, and offense spritual weapon. Aura of Conquest: Lv. This is where your Conquest really begins. This 10ft Aura brings you online as a fear consuming machine. Any creature frightened by you gets its speed reduced to 0 and takes psychic damage at the start of its turn. The most important thing is to keep your arsenal loaded with frightening spells and abilities, and that means preparing the excellent Wrathful Smite 1st-level spell , keeping it prepared and using it against the most threatening single targets. When dealing with hordes, you have Conquering Presence and later Fear as an Oath spell. Scornful Rebuke: Lv. How dare they even think of attacking you. Any time an enemy hits you with an attack, including ranged attacks, it takes your CHA-modifier in psychic damage. Every single time. Every single enemy. No reaction needed on your part. This can add up very quickly. Invincible Conqueror: Lv. Resistance to ALL damage is huge. An extra attack is always nice, especially because your crit range is expanded during this time. You spend more time healing others and casting buffs than actually doing damage. The pacifism part of this Oath can make it very challenging to play in a traditional dungeon crawl. Some of the strength in this Oath come from its Persuasion check boosts so it could be more effective in a high-roleplay campaign. Emissary of Peace: Lv. Obviously good in the social pillar. Rebuke the Violent: Lv. Useful against big damage dealers, Once per short rest you can make someone take the same amount of damage they just dished out as radiant. Still requires they fail a Wisdom saving throw. Aura of the Guardian: Lv. You can take damage instead of your allies as a reaction. Not super effective vs. Protective Spirit: Lv. And you get it three levels earlier than the Champion Fighter does. Yay for that? Emissary of Redemption: Lv. There is a constant effect with two strong benefits: Resistance to all damage vs.

Weapon Mastery grants unique effects to weapons used in combat, with different weapons having different effects, such as imposing a disadvantage or cleaving an additional enemy. This gives Paladins a list of class-exclusive smite spells that are always prepared, with new spells being unlocked as they level up. These can also be used without expending a spell slot once before needing to Long Rest. Spellcasting has seen three major changes for Paladins that are as follows: Spell preparation is no longer tied to the level of Paladin spell slots. Paladins can change one prepared spell when finishing a long rest. Paladins no longer have cantrips as in previous playtests. Instead, they receive the Weapon Mastery feature. Lay on Hands is now a Bonus Action, meaning players can use it alongside attacking, healing, using a spell, or any other move that requires an Action.

[Top 5] D&D Best Paladin Builds

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Paladins are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, with all types of armor (heavy, medium, and light), and with shields (except tower shields). The key changes to the Paladin in this playtest are primarily reworks and changes to existing material, including those found in previous Unearthed Arcana materials.
