I love the visual style of the series and look forward to seeing more in the next issue. Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto do a lot of excellent character work for Peter Parker and his cast to create this whole new world. However, I doubt anyone expected a Spider-Man comic without Spider-Man and a story that spends almost all of its time focused on Ben Parker.
By contrast, Ultimate Spider-Man 1 had emotional stakes, and a narrative that went beyond simply filling out scorecard stats; no wonder, then, that readers would respond so strongly to it. The temptation to be snarky and suggest that the secret to making a comic a hit is to make a good comic is there, of course, but a more practical and truthful variant might be to point to how strongly the audience responded to a comic that had a strong emotional core and intent beyond woolgathering.
Would the line have been more or less successful if its first release had been something like that, instead of an explanation of what was to come?

Its strength lies in the interplay between characters with intriguing twists on what we know about Spider-Man that readers will love to unravel. It stands out with its own voice, a different take on a classic character, and delivers some emotion that pulls you in and makes you care about the characters. Overall, a fantastic start to the Ultimate Universe.
Every page and panel engage the reader in this world and with these characters. I love the visual style of the series and look forward to seeing more in the next issue.

Octavius was murdered by Norman Osborn in the "Death of Spider-Man" story arc, because Octavius had decided that he no longer bore a grudge against Peter nor wished to continue being a criminal, and tried to back out as well as asking Norman to do the same and give up his vendetta. Their late fathers were lab partners who were at the second stage of developing a genetically created " suit " designed as a cure for terminal malady, meant to bond to the user and protect them from internal and external harm.
But after seeing this issue in action, there is no doubt this run will be something spectacular. It feels so of the moment and timeless all at once, reacting to the modern comic landscape while charting forward something that feels like fertile ground.
