In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, days after the release of Creed, Weathers shares his thoughts on the new film, his favorite moments of the series and how through the years Muhammad Ali tried to fight him every time they saw each other. While watching Creed, the seventh film in the Rocky franchise, Weathers says he was moved by the endearing, but not over-the-top connections to the original 1976 film. I think it stands on its own. After a brief stint at Long Beach City College, Weathers enrolled in San Diego State University, where he played linebacker, earning him letterman status in 1968 and 1969. He started out in the business with two supporting roles in low budget blaxploitation films directed by an old friend of his, Arthur Marks: "Bucktown" 1975 , and "Friday Foster" 1975. The film was a surprise box office smash, and went on to win several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
His football card states that he studied to be an actor during the off-season. Weathers signed with the B. Lions in 1971, where he would spend two years playing while finishing up his studies during the off-season at San Francisco State University. He graduated with a bachelor of arts in drama in 1974. And so, coming there is like returning to a place that you really enjoy being. Lions, Jim Young, praised his athletic and artistic talents. Still, Young was happy to see his teammate as his acting career took off in the decades since. He told the Hollywood Reporter that his start in the iconic franchise was not auspicious. He was asked to read with the writer, Stallone, then unknown. Later in life, Weathers developed a passion for directing, helming episodes of Silk Stalkings and the Lorenzo Lamas vehicle Renegade.
