I worked on a studio film, an adaptation of Little House on the Prairie, that was really close to being made at one point. So I had a couple of big things fall out in between Martha and The Nest. So you have a Janis Joplin film that falls through at the last minute and you have a Little House on the Prairie that falls through. Were you worried that would also happen with The Iron Claw? A lovely pot off the black that he engineers delightful side spin off to crash the cue ball into the pack to develop a few more reds keeps him in pole position and leaves the Wizard of Wishaw with a sinking feeling. A red to the left corner secures frame ball but he forgoes position making sure and misses a tough cut on a pink to the middle right. It means Higgins will return searching for snookers with four reds still in play.
Instead, Allen goes for broke with an attempt to the green pocket but he makes a hash of it and Higgins sinks it to the middle left. All square! He quickly darts to 35 but a pressure red to middle right briefly threatens the run. He makes it look easy as he smoothly plants it in the bag and with position restored he engineers a split. He has to be bold and nails an absolute beauty of a blue up to the green pocket.
It feels like a decisive pot but he overruns trying to land on the black and it becomes a tough cut up to the colour. It opens the door for The Pistol who mops up and nicks a cheeky red along the bottom rail. With the half century break helping him to seal the frame, the heat is off as he takes on the two remaining reds down the left rail. A yellow to its home pocket helps him down towards the pack, but he needs a good recovery with excellent control on the cue ball off the left cushion. A lovely kiss off a red tight to the black while popping away one to right corner frees up the colour.
This film is like a heavyweight fight between them. The work itself is all that matters. But these things that follow are really important to giving the film life. All those people made a big impact on me, but they were more of the daily life things as opposed to an idea of success.
Pulling great performances out of actors is one of his strong suits which he accomplishes simply by creating a comfortable atmosphere on set. He wants it to be a safe, fun place for everyone, and he misses working with a hundred people every day.
