I like that; why risk missing on Morgan Frost or Isaac Ratcliffe if you really like them? GM Ron Hextall has been a draft master during his tenure in Philly, stacking picks and making nice selections. This year was no different with Noah Cates a raw Joe Pavelski type , big goalie Kirill Ustimenko and that kid who went second overall who might be pretty decent… All jokes aside, Hextall and his staff get lots of different skill sets and positional needs every draft, which puts them in a great spot for the future. Another notable dropper was Matthew Strome, who had to wait until the fourth round before Philly snapped up the big, smart scorer. Everyone knows that Strome and to a lesser extent Vilardi needs to iron out his footwork, but he was generally seen as a second-rounder. But yet again, it feels like the team only tried to hit singles instead of taking a home run cut or two.

Playing center with a wiry frame is perfectly normal in major junior, but Hischier will need to fill out before competing and succeeding against the bigger pivots in the NHL. The biggest riser in the first round is a kid who continued to prove me wrong all season. It may seem as though sublime defender Cale Makar from the Brooks Bandits is simply a flavor-of-the-month kind of prospect because of the way he crushed a lesser-known league like the Alberta Junior Hockey League. It took a while, but I finally realized that questioning the level his competition, or his choosing to attend UMass-Amherst over bigger, tougher NCAA programs, is nitpicking at its finest. But times are changing, and the Big Leagues are desperately promoting speed and skill, two things Makar has in spades.
Klim Kostin was a favorite player of mine in the preseason, but his draft year was as incomplete as they come. He followed up a dominant Ivan Hlinka tournament with a promotion to the KHL — a rarity for pre-draft teenagers. Stuck in a depth role that saw him play under 10 minutes a game, Kostin was demoted to a lower league before shutting his season down with a shoulder injury.

У большинства скаутов и экспертов Станислав входил в топ-30 или хотя бы топ-40 до драфта. Каким образом «Кэпиталс» забрали его 86-м — загадка. Ближайшие два года Галиев проведет наверняка вне «Вашингтона», потому что свободных позиций в третьем звене под него не предвидится, да и для игры в НХЛ скауты рекомендуют ему поработать на тренажерах. Главный скаут «столичных», кстати, заикнулся, что Галиев может справиться с ролью центрального нападающего, но и там плотность будет немалой, учитывая наличие в системе Юханссона и Кузнецова. Галиев — между прочим, друг Кузнецова, это плюс к потенциалу.

В 2011-м Клим перебрался в московское «Динамо» и в двух предыдущих сезонах выступал за команды из системы этого клуба — МХК МВД и «Динамо» Балашиха , попутно успев дебютировать в КХЛ и сыграть за юниорскую сборную страны на неудачном для нее чемпионате мира в американском Гранд-Форксе. Хоккейный талант Костина сомнений не вызывает и еще прошлой осенью ему прочили гораздо более высокий номер на драфте, чем получилось в итоге. Причина проста — в декабре 2016-го нападающий получил травму плеча и пропустил из-за этого полгода. В сложившихся обстоятельствах становится очевидным: выбирая Костина «Сент-Луис» достаточно серьезно рискнул, но есть основания полагать, что этот риск все-таки окажется оправданным. Костина хвалят за серьезное отношение к делу и даже длительный простой не должен помешать ему вернуть прежние кондиции.
Если это случится, а «Блюзмены» предоставят ему реальный шанс заиграть в НХЛ, Клим вполне способен зацепиться за него. Настораживает лишь тот факт, что команда, выбравшая Костина, ставит перед собой самые большие цели, и права на ошибку у него, скорее всего, не будет. Но опасаться подобного, надеясь серьезно заиграть в НХЛ, точно нельзя.
Needless to say, Cale Makar is a true superstar that will be a face of the NHL for years if not decades. However, he quickly went about proving any skeptics wrong by tearing up the NCAA and winning the 2019 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college. Next, he joined the team for the 2019 postseason, where he played 10 games and posted six points. Following this strong start, he went on to win the 2020 Calder Trophy as the top rookie of the year and then went on to dominate the league in 2021-22 en route to winning the Norris Trophy. Finally, he capped everything off by claiming the 2022 Stanley Cup and winning the Conn Smythe Award.
Needless to say, this pick will be a defining moment for the Avalanche over the next decade-plus. Somehow, by falling down the draft board, Colorado were able to still claim the best player of the 2022 Draft. Elias Pettersson — Vancouver Canucks Despite having the second-best odds to win the draft lottery, the Vancouver Canucks fell all the way back to fifth, putting them in that awkward spot where they would miss out on the perceived top talents but still should be able to select an impactful player. As they took the stage to make the fifth-overall selection, however, few were ready for what they were about to announce. The Canucks seemingly reached and selected forward Elias Pettersson, who divided the experts. Some havd him ranked in the top ten while others saw him as a late-first rounder at best. Once Pettersson took the ice for the Canucks, he left any of his doubters behind. He set the standard throughout his rookie season in 2018-19, posting 28 goals and 66 points en route to winning the Calder Trophy despite only playing in 71 games.
Elias Pettersson has brought superstar offensive talent to the Vancouver Canucks. So, while this pick seemed risky in the moment, it ended up being an absolute hit for the Canucks. Cody Glass — Vegas Golden Knights As the talk of the town, the hockey world waited with bated breath as the Golden Knights made their first pick as a franchise. With this selection, the Golden Knights took forward Cody Glass , a big-bodied, two-way threat that many believed would become the top-line centerpiece for the fledgling franchise. Following his selection in 2017-18, he put up 102 points in 64 games for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League, further cementing him as a premier NHL prospect.

Slick-skating defenceman Cale Makar of the Brooks Bandits is ranked seventh. Makar still has plenty of growing to do in terms of learning how to harness and deploy his exceptional talents. His education will be in good hands for his upcoming freshman season at the University of Massachusetts. Sorting out the rest of the top 10 has been a convoluted journey since the initial rankings were published last fall. Cody Glass of the Portland Winterhawks Cody Glass of the Portland Winterhawks was another big riser, moving up from 24th - in the preliminary ranking - to grab the No. A cerebral two-way pivot with good size and skill, the Winnipeg native led Portland and tied for seventh in WHL scoring during a spectacular breakout season - in which he more than tripled his rookie numbers from 2015-16. However, he was sidelined early by a bout of mononucleosis and struggled to find his game after returning. Klim Kostin However, his hockey sense and overall decision making have continually come into question as the scrutiny on his game intensified.
Can this part of his make-up develop and mature? The Penza native captained Russia and led his team in scoring 5-4-3-7 while flashing an intriguing mix of size, skill and creativity. He also put in a decent showing at the Canada-Russia series in November, albeit not enough for World Junior team coach Valeri Bragin to include him on the U20 roster. Strong and skilled with the puck, Kostin can create openings with his stickhandling and 1-on-1 abilities, but must work on his skating and consistency.
He is incredibly efficient at stunting offense with his body and stick. The Stars will be content having picked Heiskanen third. He is a terrific playmaker — he ranked 10th in assists-per-60 last season — and his tireless work ethic makes him difficult to play against. He never stops competing, winning pucks and generating chances for his teammates.
He has shown some flair this season, too. Passing by Robert Thomas has been so nice this season pic. He has an elusive release and picks corners with ease. He should feast on weak matchups as a second-line center this year. In his final year of junior, he carried the Guelph Storm to the Memorial Cup with 42 points in 24 playoff games. In the NHL, he has continued to produce at an impressive rate and has shown he can run a powerplay. Some have given up on him, but if he remains healthy he can still reach his potential. His frame means he can win pick battles and maintain possession, and his quick hands and creativity mean he can create chances.
He is just as good as a setup man or a finisher. If he can round out his game and start to make the simple plays more consistently, he may end up higher on this list. However, the players above him have been more effective thus far. Standing at six-foot-three, 200 pounds, he is most effective below the hash marks where he can dictate play with his size, shot and vision. He also possesses a powerful release, making him a well-rounded threat. This season we will see whether or not Vilardi can fully recover from the injuries that have plagued his career thus far. He plays a simple but highly effective game, using his slick hands to carry the puck into vantage points where he can beat the goalie himself with or find a teammate with ease.

His NHL debut should come in 2020-21. I like Poehling as a depth option but the lack of offense he generates really limits his overall ceiling. He can help on the power play and kill penalties.
He reminds me of Anthony Cirelli. He might be a regular in Boston as soon as next season. He saw his stock dip over the course of two seasons at the University of Michigan only to explode 31 goals, 61 points in 56 games in his first AHL season. He should be in Ottawa full time this fall. He was far better in his first AHL campaign 27 goals, 53 points in 61 games than I ever would have imagined.
Jokiharju is a third-pairing regular for Buffalo. I remain out on Kostin despite the positive strides he made this season.
