Here's What We Know About The Austin Package Bomber
Ten days later, Draylen Mason, 17, was killed in an explosion that also critically injured his mother. Then, on Tuesday, a FedEx worker in Schertz was injured when the parcel went off just after midnight, officials said. Authorities suspected Conditt was the bomber and through cell phone tracking were able to locate him. By Wednesday they closed in on him only for the suspected bomber to blow himself up. Although Conditt is deceased, authorities have warned Austin residents to be vigilant, since there is the possibility that undetonated package bombs remain elsewhere.
When a SWAT team approached the vehicle, he detonated a bomb and took his own life. His whereabouts in the 24 hours prior to his encounter with police are unknown, meaning there could potentially be more bombs around Austin, according to police. Conditt was from Pflugerville, Texas, a city located about 18 miles north of Austin and seven miles from Round Rock. He had no criminal record and lived in Pflugerville with two roommates. Conditt was home-schooled and his mother, Danene Conditt, reportedly posted that he completed his high school education in 2013.
Right now our prayers are for those families that have lost loved ones, for those impacted in any way, and for the soul of our Mark. We are grieving and we are in shock. The shades were drawn, and a U. Austin police homicide Det. This is certainly a shock to the conscience. But I think it has more to do with loneliness and anger than it has to do with anything else. Community college officials said that Conditt was a business administration major and did not graduate, but that he left in good academic standing. Advertisement Conditt moved away from home in recent years and bought a house but returned to visit, Reeb said. Manley said they found the vehicle that had previously been described to police by witnesses. One of our SWAT officers fired at the suspect as well. Police reportedly identified the man after reviewing video at a FedEx store where he allegedly shipped two bombs. During an interview on KVUE, American Statesman reporter Tony Plohetski said police began to track down the suspect by finding receipts from materials he allegedly used in the bombings. The investigation led police to obtain a search warrant to obtain online search information. Some of those searches included Google searches for FedEx locations — including the Brodie Lane store where the suspect allegedly shipped two packages. The searches led to police finding the IP address of the suspect which revealed additional information. The man allegedly killed two people and injured five others in a series of explosions that rocked the capital city region since March 2. The bombing campaign began on March 2 when a package exploded in northeast Austin. The blast killed 39-year-old Anthony House. On March 12, a second package exploded when 17-year-old Draylen Mason opened a package left on the front steps of his home. The parcel exploded, killing him and injuring his mother. A third explosion detonated a few hours later and sent a 75-year-old woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It was recovered after he detonated one of his own bombs along the side of Interstate 35 just outside of Austin as a SWAT team moved in. Conditt built bombs planted in different parts of the city that killed two people and severely wounded four others over three weeks starting on March 2. He began by placing explosives in packages left overnight on doorsteps, then rigged an explosive to a tripwire along a public trail. Finally, he sent two parcels with bombs via FedEx. As fear grew, Conditt eventually was tracked down through store surveillance video, cellphone signals and witness accounts of a customer shipping FedEx packages in a disguise that included a blond wig and gloves.
Authorities had previously begged for information following three isolated residential attacks with small package bombs, a blast on a street in an Austin neighborhood and an explosion at a FedEx facility near San Antonio from a package sent from and intended to reach Austin. Another package sent by Conditt was intercepted at a FedEx facility and was later confirmed to contain a bomb. In the past 36 hours, law enforcement received information directing them to the person of interest, who ultimately became a suspect.
Austin police chief Brian Manley said officers used CCTV, cell phone data, witness accounts and store receipts to track the bomber to a hotel north of the city. A SWAT officer fired his weapon at the suspect after another officer was knocked down by the blast.
The attacks are being investigated by the FBI, local police and other federal agencies. The killer, who earned the Unabomber nickname before he was captured, used the US Postal Service to carry out deadly mail bomb attacks that he said were motivated by a love of nature and a hatred of modern technology. Following the Austin incidents, former FBI assistant director told Fox News that comparisons between the Texas bomber and the Unabomber are appropriate. They were very effective. He added: "This is a race against time to find him before he bombs again. He was tracked down to a remote cabin in the state of Montana, where he lived alone without electricity or running water. Prosecutors sought the death penalty after Kaczynski, now 75, was arrested in 1996.
Evidence at the scene, including surveillance photos, led authorities to Conditt.
In security camera photos, police believe Conditt dropped off the package bombs at the FedEx facility while wearing a wig. Still, authorities were able to learn enough from the footage that they tracked him down. When a SWAT team approached the vehicle, he detonated a bomb and took his own life. His whereabouts in the 24 hours prior to his encounter with police are unknown, meaning there could potentially be more bombs around Austin, according to police.
