Which Paladin Oath should you pick? (DnD 5E)

We saw White show up in our Cleric video and yet both represent different sides of the color. For the Cleric this color denotes service to a higher power, and whites proclivity to gravitate towards religion. In the case of the Paladin, it keys into ideas of strict morality, resolve, and justice. White is the color who often works in absolutes, seeing the worlds as black and white.
They hold themselves and the world around them to a code of conduct, often through laws or judgment. White is shrewd in its outlook and enacts its ideals as the literal and only law. This can lead to both truly heroic and selfless characters or that of authoritarian and oppressive ones. I believe that the Paladin can be built in both ways, even through oaths which are outwardly facing as good. This absolute mindset and devoted nature is why White matches so well with the Paladin.
To start off I want to take our core color and add in Red to see what sort of Paladin is bread from these colors influences. Coloring their view of the world around them, and vengeance can seem like the only outlet for such emotions. Not just vengeance on those who did them wrong, but against all who act with hate towards others. It is an act of violence against those who do wrong to the weak and judgment handed out is this characters only recourse. What I mean is that there are those are acted upon by ruthless external forces who are unable to stand up to such aggressors and the oath of vengeance paladin is there to fill in that role, by being that act of recourse for those unable to do so, placing fear in the heart of those who bring fear to others.
In the case of our White Red character they had felt the hand of an evil force mar their view of the world and vowed that such horrific actions should never go unpunished. They found that the sword, shield and divine magic were tools they could use to enact vengeance on the behalf of others, for those who could not stand up for themselves. They now see themselves as Judge Jury and executioner. This outlook and life have hardened them with an unquenchable resolve. You see a traumatic experiences at a young age can harden a person and such is the case of this version of the Paladin.
One which defines the characters life thereafter. White in this regard is the expression of Judgment and Justice, justice on the behalf of others to weak to stand against the darkness of the world. The issue is that Justice is blind, and can be dished out when it is potentially not appropriate. This can add a lot of nuance to your character when playing them.
With that pool, you can cause a total damage equal to your anti-paladin level x 5. As an action, you can make melee spell attack against a creature within reach. On a hit, you can draw power from the pool to cause damage to that creature, up to the maximum amount remaining in your pool. The damage is necrotic. Alternatively, you can expend 5 points from your pool of harm to inflict the target with poison. The target is poisoned until the end of your next turn. At 17th level, you can spend 85 points from your pool to cast contagion. This feature has no effect on constructs. Undead creatures regain hit points with this feature, instead of taking damage. Pact Magic[ edit ] At 2nd level, your arcane research and the magic bestowed on you by your vile patron have given you the ability to cast spells. Spell Slots The Anti-Paladin table shows how many spell slots you have. The table also shows what the level of those slots is; all of your spell slots are the same level. To cast one of your Anti-Paladin spells of 1st level or higher, you must expend a spell slot. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a short or long rest.
Make sure you take proficiency in Perception if you can manage it without sacrificbing a Face skill. Nothing fancy, but very effective. Lightly-armored paladins might still prefer a Broom of Flying. Fire and poison are safe choices. Imagine rushing to get to 20 Strength then finding an item that raises your Strength to 21 more with higher rarities. Still, if you can get one you absolutely should. Taking damage from any source spells, etc. You can notably cast every spell from the beads as a Bonus Action yes, including Planar Ally which normally has a 10-minute casting time , allowing you to quickly heal allies or get Bless running while leaving your Action for attacks or cantrips. Periapt of Proof Against Poison DMG : Poison damage is very common across the full level range, so immunity to it is a significant improvement in your durability. Ring of Spell Storing DMG : Fill it with Absorb Elements and Shield and recharge it whenever possible and this is a spectacular defensive asset on almost any character. Radiant damage is great, but most creatures with resistance to weapon damage types are affected normally by magic weapons so the benefits of radiant damage compared to piercing or slashing damage from a magical we oapon are minor. Animated Shield DMG : Tempting for anyone not fighting with a one-handed weapon, but a Cloak of Protection is two rarities lower, works persistently, and arguably provides a better numeric bonus. If you plan to get full plate, get Dwarven Plate instead. For a Strength-based character, raising your Strength above 20 is a massive benefit, and going up as high as 25 is spectacular. Invoking the rune on Bloodshed Blade lets you perform a once-per-day nuke which should nicely eliminate whatever thing to drop all of your hit dice on top of. Yes, you get resistance to fire damage, but you can get that from dozens of other sources by this level. Scimitar of Speed DMG : Among the best weapons to use with the Dueling style, you get two-weapon fighting action economy on a single weapon. Increasing your Strength or Dexterity may be more important, but if you can get both you absolutely should. At high enough level that you might have this item there will definitely be enemies with access to magic attacks spellcasters, magic weapons, natural weapons which count as magical, etc. It feels underwhelming at this rarity, but the math is good. Note that this is just the invisible condition, not the spell have Invisibility, so you can still attack or whatever while invisible. Otherwise, this is a really fun item, and if it provided Advantage on saves against area of effect spells it would shoot straight up to blue.

Мнение: Что такое Паладин?
The Redians were rewarded by the king. The queen was very thankful for the death of her nemesis. She offered Zaela and her clerics a permanent place in Yorebridge Castle if she ever needed a safe place to stay. With the death of Gulo, peace in the land has once again been established. But more than once, someone has thought of reviving the great dragon Gulo from his sleep beneath Yorebridge Castle. Some think it is just a rumor, while others are sure that someone is trying to recreate one of the most powerful dragons in history! It will be up to Hunter and Zaela to stop these people before they destroy the world all over again! Personality: Xanthe is an idealist.
She is determined to protect the weak and weak of heart. She will always try to do the right thing and see the good in others— even when it seems impossible. Her ambition is to travel around the world and do good wherever she goes. Appearance: Xanthe is a tall, thin halfling with dark green hair. She is very muscular from years of training and fighting. Her striking, blue eyes make her appear even taller. When she is on her horse, she dons a beautiful long, white robe that features a depiction of Helm on the back.
Start of Character: She is intent on helping the war effort of the Grabisco Kingdom and finding adventure wherever it takes her. He was taken in by an order of paladins and raised as one of their own. He became famed for his numerous heroic deeds, including slaying a dragon. He was dubbed a paladin of light. He has set out to rid the world of the evil that lurks in the dark. His current task is to gather a group of adventurers to destroy the Dark Master, who has corrupted the Kingdom of Grabisco. Larak is a likable fellow.
As a Paladin of Light, he travels the Kingdom of Grabisco, performing miracles and fighting evil whenever it rears its ugly head. He is passionate about his work, and tough in combat, although he prefers to negotiate with enemies before resorting to violence. Larak is one of the seven Paladins of Light that disappeared during the Great War. They remain missing to this day. A faithful paladin, Larek is plagued by doubt after learning that the Dark Master was truly his brother Setral. The loss of his brother Setral at the hands of Gol-Tavan will only strengthen his resolve in fighting the dark forces through magic and faith.
The fact that it only lasts for one minute means you need to use it wisely. Oath of Vengeance This Paladin build is the most offensive, attack-focused style of play, and will maximize the damage you deal while leaving healing and support primarily to the Cleric. It does well in tandem with another melee character to grans flanking bonuses, or a battlefield control caster to funnel enemies towards the pointy end. Dimension Door is just a longer- range Misty Step.
Scrying is situational. Channel Divinity: One bad option and one perfect option make your choice on which to use easy. This is the bad option. Vow of Enmity: Here we go! Starting a boss fight? You have advantage against him. Relentless Avenger: Slower enemies will have a hard time getting away from you. Consider taking Polearm Master to further increase your threat radius and keep chasing them down. Soul of Vengeance: An extra attack each round against your target of Vow of Enmity greatly increases your damage output. Avenging Angel: Flight for an hour a day is pretty rad.
The fear aura will hold lesser foes at bay while you take on the big bad, preventing you from being swarmed. All the abilities are great, but only apply in certain situations. If your campaign setting calls for it, this is one of the strongest paladin subclasses. However, in a vacuum when compared to the others, it underperforms. Oath Spells: A wide variety of spells that are mostly situational or overlap with other party roles. Ahead of a fight with casters, this is a solid buff, but otherwise it wastes an action you would otherwise use smiting. Abjure the Extraplanar: Situational. Aura of the Sentinel: An initiative boost for entering combat in tight formation. Vigilant Rebuke: Situational. Good against some casters.
This Sacred Oath is more important for villainous archetypes than the others and gives an evil-aligned campaign a solid tank option. Oathbreaker paladins are free to pursue dark goals, or accompany some more roguish characters, such as a party of warlocks, bards, and rogues, on adventures. Oath Spells: Some of the options are bad and will never be used, but there are a few gems on this list. Go from being outnumbered to an overwhelming force in the blink of an eye. As long as you have the materials prepared ahead of time, your reinforcements can arrive when you most need them. Use it to animate a dead body to kill enemies and animate them tomorrow for a never-ending cycle. Confusion is unreliable compared to other single-target enchantment spells like Hold Person, given the randomness of its effect. Touch a target in a crowd and watch them deteriorate before confronting them for the kill. Dominate Person is a powerful way to temporarily gain an extra party member. Control Undead is on theme, but less relevant.
Control Undead: Rather than turning undead, you can redirect them. This only works on minor threats, however, as any serious undead threat is going to be too powerful for you to control. Putting a swath of creatures into a frightened panic in your presence allows your allies to mop them up relatively easily. The damage bonus will stack considerably. Supernatural Resistance: Resistance to nonmagical damage makes you very difficult to kill when facing down minor enemies. Dread Lord: This ability does a ton of damage. Using it in conjunction with your channel divinity will allow you to chase enemies down and cause psychic damage to them, get an extra attack, and also take your normal attack. Animal Handling: Nature paladins and those who engage in mounted combat should grab this skill when available. Arcana: Divine casters usually take Religion over Arcana. Athletics: Strength is one of your main stats.
Deception: Paladins are straight-talking Lawful Good guys, but they do have Charisma as a main stat… History: Not terribly important Insight: The one Wisdom skill you should concern yourself with. Intimidation: Another great Charisma skill for you. Investigation: Not your strong suit. Perception: Spot enemies sneaking up on you. Performance: Not your job. Persuasion: This is your most important skill. Sweet talk your way out of or into anywhere. Stealth: Not another Dexterity skill… Survival: Nature paladins only. Backgrounds Acolyte: Thematically this might make sense, as you get two skills off the paladin skill list, but neither are very useful given your ability score priorities. Versatile, but not ideal.
Criminals are evil. Entertainer: bad skills for a heavily armored tank. Faction AgentSCAG: A fantastic choice, given the versatility in skill selection, and two bonus languages along with 15 GP, which happens to be the most of any background. Though they do make you more balanced. FisherGoS: Neither skill provided by this background is terribly relevant for Paladins. However, there are better backgrounds for that particular archetype. Hermit: Medicine and Religion are your two most useful class skills. MarineGoS: In a sea-faring campaign, this is the perfect background. Vehicle proficiency helps you contribute to the crew. Two great skills off your list, vehicle proficiency, and a feature that helps advance the plot if your DM is clever about it.
Noble: History is less useful than religion for you specifically, but persuasion is your main skill. Sage: Not relevant for a Paladin. Sailor: Athletics and Perception is a solid combination. Proficiencies with water vehicles and free passage to new places opens up avenues of exploration. ShipwrightGoS: The vehicle proficiency is the only things of value from this background.
Lay on Hands is now a Bonus Action, meaning players can use it alongside attacking, healing, using a spell, or any other move that requires an Action. Aura of Protection has returned to 6th-level and will now become inactive if the Paladin is incapacitated.
Adjure Foes will now do nothing on a successful save. Aura of Courage has returned to being a 10th-level feature. Radiant Strikes now work on both melee weapons and Unarmed Strikes. Restoring Touch has been moved to a 14th-level class feature. Divine Conduit has been removed from the class features, with Aura Expansion returning at 18th-level. These changes are as follows Oath of Devotion: With the changes to Smites, some spells and revisions have happened to the Oath of Devotions spell list, and it is now as follows: 3rd — Protection from Evil and Good, Shield of Faith 5th — Aid, Zone of Truth 9th — Beacon of Hope, Dispel Magic 13th — Freedom of Movement, Guardian of Faith 17th — Commune, Flame Strike Smite of Protection has also been moved to 15th-level and works with all Smite spells, and provides Half Cover to every player in range of your Aura of Protection until the start of your next turn.
Now you choose an oath, such as the Oath of Devotion. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level. Those features include oath spells and the Channel Divinity feature. Oath Spells Each oath has a list of associated spells. You gain access to these spells at the levels specified in the oath description. Once you gain access to an oath spell, you always have it prepared. Channel Divinity Your oath allows you to channel divine energy to fuel magical effects. Each Channel Divinity option provided by your oath explains how to use it. When you use your Channel Divinity, you choose which option to use. You must then finish a short or long rest to use your Channel Divinity again. Some Channel Divinity effects require saving throws. When you use such an effect from this class, the DC equals your paladin spell save DC. Ability Score Improvement When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. Extra Attack Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. You must be conscious to grant this bonus. At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet. Improved Divine Smite By 11th level, you are so suffused with righteous might that all your melee weapon strikes carry divine power with them. Whenever you hit a creature with a melee weapon, the creature takes an extra 1d8 radiant damage. If you also use your Divine Smite with an attack, you add this damage to the extra damage of your Divine Smite.
Paladin 5e Class Guide for Dungeons and Dragons
The alternative, Control Undead, lets you bring any undead creature under your mental control. If nothing else, these starter-necromancy spells are fun to play around with. At level 15, Supernatural Resistance grants permanent protection from bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage dealt by non-magical weapons, seriously boosting your defenses. Later on, higher-level spells like Blight and Contagion can really help you pile on damage. Paladin 5e spells Although most at home in the thick of battle, swinging a greatsword and relying on thick plate armor to glance incoming blows, Paladins have a powerful spell list open to them. The rapid growth of spell slots that Paladins gain as they level makes them formidable defensive spellcasters, that can challenge the utility of any half-baked Cleric. When picking spells, bear two things in mind: Concentration and Charisma. Your Cha modifier dictates how many spells you may prepare after each long rest and, in several cases, their effectiveness. As for picking spells, Paladins have it easy.
Use this freedom to experiment with the many options available, and test out creative combinations. Find Steed Level: Two Summon a loyal animal to fight by your side, whether a horse, mastiff, camel, or anything else you can wrangle out of your DM. Anything you summon will stick around until it drops to zero HP. Revivify Level: Three A classic. Destructive Wave Level: Five Create a burst of divine energy that deals 5d6 damage, plus 5d6 radiant or necrotic damage, to every creature 30 feet in front of you that fails on a Con saving throw. Its potential to impair whole swathes of enemies is remarkable in itself, but particularly useful for Paladins that struggle with area-of-effect attacks. These are the worst Paladin spells, which are best avoided: Purify Food and Drink Level: One Remove poison and disease from any non-magical drink or foodstuff.
The issue is that Inspiring Leader is a much better fit for the Paladin, providing considerably more total temporary hit points with less time and effort, and removing the need to constantly eat snacks in combat. Paladins do very little with their bonus action, so TWF might be a decent option. The numeric bonus to damage is more effective offensively than upgrading from d6 to d8 damage dice, though you do lose the AC bonus. Durable PHB : Paladins have plenty of healing options. The 1st-level spells are hard for the Paladin. Bless is a solid buff, but without proficiency in Constitution saves it can be hard to maintain Concentration, though Aura of Protection helps a lot. Hex is a good offensive option, but with only two attacks it may not be especially helpful. Grappler PHB : Just a terrible feat in general. Great Weapon Master PHB : Paladins have several options for boosting their attack rolls, so you can find a way to offset the -5 penalty to attacks for that huge pile of extra damage. Healer PHB : Paladins have plenty of magical options for healing. Lucky PHB : Good on anyone. If you want to rely more directly on cantrips, consider Fighting Style Blessed Warrior instead. Big sections of the monster manual are medium or smaller, so you have easy access to Advantage. Regardless of how you handle your mount, be sure to read my Practical Guide to Mounted Combat. Piercer TCoE : The damage reroll mechanic notably applies to the bonus damage dice applied by Divine Smite, allowing you to boost your damage by rerolling the lowest die. The ability to make Opportunity Attacks when enemies move into your reach gives you a good way to use your Reaction consistently, especially if you use things like Compelled Duel to motivate enemies to attack you. You can even get away with using a quarterstaff or spear and a shield spear was added in errata in 2018. The largest damage die d12 , yields an average of 2 extra damage per turn. The reaction option also makes things like Fighting Style: Protection redundant. Sharpshooter PHB : Paladins are terrible at ranged combat. Skilled PHB : You can get all the skills you need from your race, class, and background. Slasher TCoE : The speed reduction is a great way to keep enemies from escaping you.
Likewise, she must not overburden her subjects so that they cannot support her. Associates A despot adventures only with characters of a non-chaotic alignment and remains suspicious and wary of those who are not lawful. She will never knowingly associate with chaotic characters, nor will she continue an association with someone who consistently offends her moral code. This includes remaining in a group in which she is not equal or superior to the highest-level member A despot can adventure or associate with those of equal level, although doing so makes her more uncomfortable and irritable than normal. A despot may only accept henchmen, followers, or cohorts who are lawful evil. Despot Spell List Despots choose their spells from the following list: 1st Level: Alarm, bane, bless, curse water, command, cure light wounds, detect poison, divine favor, endure elements, magic weapon, profane weapon, protection from chaos, protection from good, resistance, virtue. Detect Undead Lightbringer paladins are little different from standard paladins, and share the same compassion to pursue good, the will to uphold law, and the power to defeat evil. However, the lightbringer paladin has made it her specialization to seek out and destroy undead, seeing them as the penultimate manifestation of evil in the world. Level: 1st. Replaces: Detect evil. Benefit: A lightbringer paladin can use this ability at will. This is a divination effect similar to a detect evil spell, except that it finds undead only of any alignment. At the moment the paladin uses the ability, she knows if there are any undead within a chosen 60-degree arc, knows the exact number , and knows their exact location. This ability is the equivalent of a 2nd-level spell. It is a spell-like ability.
Protector Good for: A variation of the tank so great for soaking up attacks, but works closely with allies to protect them from danger. Creating a protector: High strength for melee weapons , high constitution, heavy armor to increase AC full plate if you can afford it. You can take spells like heroism and bless to enhance your allies bless is usually the better option, but heroism is good if you expect to face a frightening enemy and compelled duel to prevent others being attacked. How it works: Tactically, the protector build is the hardest to make work. Interception will be used a little less than the other fighting styles making them technically inferior though not bad. Use your auras to protect allies from conditions, again, staying close to allies. Which subclass should I choose? Oaths tend to form a large part of the ideals for your paladin, so a paladin seeking to make restitution for past crimes might take the oath of redemption while paladins seeking to exact righteous judgement on their foes might take the oath of vengeance. Oath of Devotion Description: Holy warriors, devoted to their cause. Good for: Archetypal paladins with a broad mix of abilities. Oath of the Ancients Description: Paladins that seek to wage war against darkness for a love of light and life. Good for: Paladins that want to be a bit more like a ranger. Good for: Paladins that want to exact as much damage as possible, as quickly as possible. Good for: Paladins that have broken their oaths. Good for: Paladins that want to go big on protecting their allies. Oath of Conquest Description: A paladin sworn to conquer and bring about victory. Good for: Paladins that want to deal more damage and handle crowds better. Oath of Redemption Description: Paladins that believe anyone can be redeemed and will inflict death only as a last resort. Good for: Paladins that prefer to talk first and punch later. Oath of Glory Description: A paladin that has made an oath to win at all costs and have their name etched into legends. Good for: Paladins that like to throw themselves into combat. Oath of the Watchers Description: A paladin that watches for and protects from the unnatural and alien forces of the universe. Good for: Paladins that want to deal with extra-planar threats. How to optimise a paladin Optimising a character properly can be tricky.
Which Paladin Oath should you pick? (DnD 5E)
Weapon Mastery grants unique effects to weapons used in combat, with different weapons having different effects, such as imposing a disadvantage or cleaving an additional enemy. This gives Paladins a list of class-exclusive smite spells that are always prepared, with new spells being unlocked as they level up. These can also be used without expending a spell slot once before needing to Long Rest. Spellcasting has seen three major changes for Paladins that are as follows: Spell preparation is no longer tied to the level of Paladin spell slots. Paladins can change one prepared spell when finishing a long rest.
Paladins no longer have cantrips as in previous playtests. Instead, they receive the Weapon Mastery feature. Lay on Hands is now a Bonus Action, meaning players can use it alongside attacking, healing, using a spell, or any other move that requires an Action.
Guided Strike: This is a really great ability that ensures you hit with an attack, which means you get to smite. Aura of Conquest: You have two ways to cause fear, your channel divinity and the fear spell, both of which require a save DC. If you needed a reason to increase your Charisma, this is it. The ability to lock down terrified enemies can end an encounter or prevent a squad of minions from moving. Scornful Rebuke: Cast Compel Duel on an enemy, and then watch them kill themselves. More hits coming in means more damage going out. Invincible Conqueror: For 1 minute per day you become an absolute wrecking ball. Oath of Devotion This is the most typical version of a Paladin. It provides a mix of abilities that are intuitive and have a good degree of synergy. Protection from Evil and Good is a very strong buff, especially when used to prevent or control possession and charm effects at low levels, when your party is particularly susceptible to them. Guardian of Faith is a very strong area control spell. Commune is tricky to use well. Channel Divinity: Two useful options that feel very…paladin-y. Sacred Weapon: Granting yourself a magic weapon for a minute is very useful at low levels, but chances are any magic weapons you find over time will outclass this eventually. Turn the Unholy: Adding turning undead and fiends to your list of abilities is useful for dealing with crowds of monsters. Purity of Spirit: Protection from Evil and Good is an amazing defensive buff, and having it permanently running without needing to concentrate is spectacular. This also keeps pesky minions off your back, allowing you to save your weapon attacks for the main villain. Unlike the other Sacred Oaths, this one grants abilities that can most easily be used to prevent or end encounters and promote diplomatic avenues. This sacred oath requires you to max out your Charisma as soon as possible, in order to make the best use of your Charisma-based skills and spellcasting, all of which relies on your targets failing the spell save DC. Oath Spells: Your spells are all excellent and on theme. Calm emotions is a strong area of effect spell, but only works situationally. They give you great resilience. Wall of force is the best wall spell in the game. Channel Divinity: Both options are easy to use and commonly activated. Rebuke the Violent: Great to use against enemy casters, or big monsters who hit hard. Did they just hurt you? Make them feel your pain. Aura of the Guardian: Being able to soak up damage lets you tank at short range. In case one of your squishier party members accidentally gets hurt, you can soak it for them. Protective Spirit: This makes Aura of the Guardian safer to use and helps keep you alive. Emissary of Redemption: By being a punching bag, you can take no actions and kill something. Oath of the Ancients Ah, the Nature Paladin. Oath of the Ancients shares a lot of abilities with both Rangers and Druids. It includes abilities that restrain and hinder movement of enemies, which gives you a great degree of battlefield control. Misty Step is a great spell that solves a lot of mobility problems including pits, difficult terrain, walls, and enemies. Protection From Energy is a mandatory spell for any adventurer going after dragons, elementals, or any higher level caster. Stone Skin is a good buff, but it has an expensive material component. Given that you learn it at 13th-level, many enemies you encounter will have magic attacks. Channel Divinity: Two options that give you decent battlefield control. Aura of Warding: Resistance to spell damage turns you into a safe haven from enemy spellcasters. You are provided with several abilities to single out foes and taunt them into attacking you over your weaker, more vulnerable allies. Additionally, you are afforded ways to take damage that would otherwise be dealt to your friends and use your large pool of hit points and healing options to soak up damage instead. This gives your healer a more efficient turn, where they only have to heal you with a single spell, rather than taking multiple turns to spread it around. Oath Spells: Crown spells are a mix of useful and useless spells. Some of these spells are going to be used constantly, others are going to be converted into smites. Command is somewhat less useful. Warding Bond is a great way to ensure a squishy character stays alive, shunting damage they would take to you instead. Zone of Truth is very situational. Spirit Guardians a strong effect, but useless on ranged foes unless you spend your time chasing them around. Guardian of Faith is one of the best area control options available to you. Geas is usually less useful than killing something outright, but plays into your good-alignment sensibilities, and grants you some depth and could ultimately add a fun twist to the plot. Champion Challenge: Taunt effects are rare in 5e, and this one hits a wide area. Turn the Tide: A small amount of AoE healing is great in combination with your Lay on Hands ability, giving you even more utility as a support character. Divine Allegiance: Another way to redirect damage to yourself, giving your healing a single target. Exalted Champion: Unlike most other Paladin Oath capstone abilities, this one lasts for 1 hour instead of 1 minute. While less overtly powerful offensively, you gain a great defensive buff that extends to your allies, keeping everyone in it until the end, while making your whole team exceptionally difficult to kill. It provides you all the skillsof a great athlete and allows you to excel in combat. This Oath emphasizes your physical attributes while downplaying your spellcasting and diplomatic skills. Peerless Athlete: Activating this as a bonus action is a huge asset, you can pop it before trying to make a shove against an enemy. Inspiring Smite: Healing on demand for yourself and others. The radius increase at 18th level is nice, but again, too little too late. Glorious Defense: This is a really solid defensive ability. Use a reach weapon, profit.
Paladins can use simple weapons clubs and maces and martial weapons swords and axes. Paladins are best using melee weapons. Paladins can use ranged weapons, but it is not recommended. What saving throws are Paladins proficient in? Wisdom and Charisma. What skills do Paladins have? When creating a Paladin, you can choose two special skills. For example, a devout and charismatic Paladin might choose Persuasion and Religion as his special skills. What equipment do Paladins start with? What special abilities do Paladins have? Paladins can use Divine Sense as an action to detect celestial , fiend, or undead beings within 60ft. Paladins have a pool of divine power in them that can be used to heal wounds. The pool can also be used to cure diseases. Your pool will replenish after a long rest. Leveled up abilities As Paladins advance, they will gain more special abilities. What is the Paladin Sacred Oath? At the 3rd level, Paladins take a Sacred Oath. This commits your character to the holy quest they are on as well as giving them special Oath Spells. There are three Sacred Oaths to choose from in 5e. Each oath has specific tenets, spells, and abilities. Paladins who take the Oath of Devotion are sometimes known as holy warriors or white knights. They are committed to the highest ideals of justice and virtue. What are the tenets of the Oath of Devotion? The tenets of the Oath of Devotion are rooted in justice, virtue, and order. These are: Honesty: You cannot lie or cheat Courage: You are never too afraid to act Compassion: You help others, show mercy, and protect those who cannot protect themselves Honor: You treat all fairly and do as much good as possible Duty: You feel a strong sense of duty to those you protect and those you follow What are the Oath of Devotion spells? Every few levels, Paladins get new spells based on their oath. At lower levels, you can cast protection from evil and good, sanctuary , lesser restoration , and zone of truth. Other Oath of Devotion abilities The Oath of Devotion offers several other abilities depending on your level. The weapon will also emit a bright light and become magical useful against monsters who only take damage from magical weapons. Turn Undead: Hold up your Holy Symbol and chant a prayer.

The key changes to the Paladin in this playtest are primarily reworks and changes to existing material, including those found in previous Unearthed Arcana materials. Dungeons and Dragons.
DnD 5. История знакомства. Нам не страшен паладин
But if creative roleplay better suits your campaign, Emissary of Peace allows you to avoid even the most certain of conflicts. Upon reaching fourth level, take the Tough feat. At level eight, increase your Cha score so you can make better use of your absolutely excellent spell list, and put your Oath spells to maximum use. From here, your Paladin should be set up to use the Aura of the Guardian class feature efficiently. Keep plugging Cha and Con, letting damage dealing fall to other party members. Rock Gnome Lancer For a slightly sillier, and outright peculiar playstyle, consider building your Paladin as a mounted lancer, harrying the enemy with recurring charges. Playing a mounted character can be tricky, although Paladins get around the most persistent problems using their Find Steed spell.
Employed correctly, mounts grant mobility improvements, as well as combat advantages, such as letting you disengage without provoking an attack of opportunity. Ability Scores Nothing fancy here. Details Pick Gnome 5e as your race. As small creatures, they can ride medium mounts, including mastiffs, ponies, hippogriffs, and other tamable creatures, letting you enter dungeons or cramped spaces with relative ease. Be sure to pick a lance for your weapon, as its the highest damage-dealing martial option, and pad yourself with plate armor. At third level, choose the Oath of Devotion.
Its list of protective and condition spells is reliable, if unremarkable. At fourth level, be sure to have the Find Steed spell prepared, so you can summon a mount wherever you like, and take the Mounted Combatant Feat. At level eight, improve your Str, which will likely be lagging at this point.
Advantage on your save to maintain Concentration is a solid bonus for Paladins since many very effective buffs require Concentration, but I would consider Resilient before you consider this. If you can pick up a Cantrip like Booming Blade or Word of Radiance, this becomes considerably more interesting.
Paladin Weapons This section covers weapons which specifically appeal to the Paladin. For more advice on choosing weapons, including those not addressed here, see our Practical Guide to Weapons. Get a polearm. Works best when combined with Polearm Master and Sentinel.
Javelin: Likely your go-to ranged option. Rapier: Go-to option for finesse builds. Paladin Armor Chain Mail: Starting armor. Studded Leather: Armor for finesse builds.
For more on multiclassing, see our Practical Guide to Multiclassing.
Protecting against charm can be big against a spell like Hypnotic Pattern , but this aura is definitely on the weaker side. Hold Person and Misty Step spells at 5th level and the ability to instantly chase an enemy after hitting them with an opportunity attack. This subclass is all about control, mobility, and pursuit. Misty Step is great, and Hold Person sets you up for big damage critical strikes. The chase effect is situationally nice, but this subclass does miss out on the utility of a party-wide aura. Oathbreaker DMG.
Hellish Rebuke and Inflict Wounds spells and the ability to control undead creatures with Channel Divinity at the 3rd level. Crown of Madness and Darkness spells at 5th level and an aura that causes nearby fiends and undead to take extra damage at 7th level. Controlling undead creatures can be cool, but unless your campaign features a lot of them, this subclass is ultimately one of the weaker ones. Conquest XGtE. Armor of Agathys and Command spells and the ability to frighten creatures in a large area with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. This subclass is all about controlling big crowds of enemies. All four low-level spells that Conquest Paladins get are great and useful to have prepared at all times.
Redemption XGtE. Sanctuary and Sleep spells and the ability to either boost your Persuasion checks or use a reaction to deal mirrored damage at an enemy attacker with Channel Divinity at the 3rd level. Calm Emotions and Hold Person spells at 5th level and an aura that transfers damage taken by an ally to you instead at 7th level. Sleep and Hold Person are good spells, and the ability to have both a useful out-of-combat Channel Divinity is nice, even if the rebuke power is ultimately more powerful when used in the right situation. Glory TCoE. Guiding Bolt and Heroism spells at 5th level and the ability to gain advantage on Athletics and Acrobatics checks or grant temporary hit points to allies after using Divine Smite with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. Enhance Ability and Magic Weapon spells and an aura that increases the movement speed of nearby allies at 7th level.
Enhance Ability furthers this even further. Heroism and the Inspiring Smite facet of Channel Divinity both help solidify this subclass as a wonderful support as well. Watchers TCoE. Alarm and Detect Magic spells and the ability to grant advantage on mental saving throws with their Channel Divinity at 3rd-level. Moonbeam and See Invisibility spells at 5th level and an aura that boosts initiative at 7th level. Watchers are dedicated to not being caught off guard, as their extra spells and class features show. Advantage on mental saving throws Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma for a full minute is quite strong, but the extra spells they get are a bit weak.
If you do go this route, consider starting with a level of fighter to get proficiency in Constitution saving throws. It will advance your spellcasting twice as fast as Paladin levels, and a single level gets you cantrips and access to the 1st-level abilities of a sorcerous origin.
Warlock: A common, popular, and effective option. Though other patrons have plenty to offer, Hexblade is simply too good to pass up. First, the sword glows almost as brightly as a torch, allowing you to see in dark places without devoting a hand to a torch and without asking your allies to cast light or something. Second, and more important, it allows you to overcome damage resistance to non-magic attacks. Resistances like this are common as you gain levels, and the Moon-Touched Sword is an inexpensive way to overcome them until a better weapon comes along. The actual magic stuff is amusing, but probably not important.
Most melee fighters will prefer a Moon-Touched Sword, but for polearm masters this is your best bet at this rarity. Uncommon Magic Items Adamantine Armor DMG : Curiously, due to the insanely high price of full plate and the inconsistent price of magic items, adamantine full plate can often be less expensive than regular full plate. Boomerang Shield BoMT : An interesting solution to range weaponry, providing the benefits of a returning weapon while also providing the benefit of a shield. If you dumped Strength to 8, going straight to 19 can be helpful.
