Your pool of available healing scales with level. Divine Smite. Divine Health. Extra Attack. Aura of Protection.
Aura of Courage. Improved Divine Smite. Cleansing Touch. Aura Improvements.
Paladin Spells Paladin spells are largely centered around utility, support, healing, and boosting Paladin attacks with various smite effects. Plus, Divine Smite expends spell slots, so Paladin gameplay usually involves always maintaining at least one spell slot in reserve for when you land a critical strike and want to apply big-time Divine Smite damage to it. Without getting into all the various uses, here are some of the best Paladin spells in 5e by level: 1st-level. Blinding Smite, Revivify, Spirit Shroud 4th-level.
Death Ward, Find Greater Steed 5th-level. Banishing Smite, Destructive Wave, Holy Weapon Paladin Feats Paladins should usually focus on maxing out their Charisma ability score as fast as possible by spending their Ability Score Increases on it rather than feats. This increases your number of prepared spells and makes Aura of Protection more effective. Some of the best feats for Paladins in 5e include: Polearm Master.
A free low-damage bonus action attack and the ability to make an opportunity attack when someone enters your reach. This feat really shines, however, when paired with the Sentinel feat. Good for a tank, and great when paired with Polearm Master — because it prevents an enemy from even getting in range to hit you if you freeze them 10 feet away from you with a reach weapon. Inspiring Leader.
Great Weapon Master. Gives you a free attack after a killing blow or critical strike and allows you to deal bigger damage at the cost of a less accurate attack. Resilient Constitution. Always useful, especially if your Constitution score is currently sitting at an odd number.
War Caster. Advantage on concentration checks, ability to use somatic components of spells while your hands are full, and the ability to cast some spells as an opportunity attack.
Examples of Tanks in pop culture would be the Hulk, Superman, and the Juggernaut. Tanks can be damage dealers as well but their main focus is to absorb damage so that other archetypes like skirmishers or glass cannons can do their thing without getting clobbered before they get to do anything. These work together in order to grant resistance to all incoming non magical damage, make sure that any ranged attacks made in your general direction target you instead of allies, and increase your hit point maximum.
All of these are synergistically adding up to keeping you, and consequently your allies, in the fight longer. This build focuses on putting out the highest amount of damage possible with less regard for the well being of yourself or your party.
You like to reserve your spells for role-play, and focus on your weapons for combat. The ancient oath works with all kinds of nature to vanquish those who would seed evil into otherwise peaceful grounds. Game Mechanics: Additional spells, with a nature focus, work to control movement and interact with plants and animals. They can call upon nature to root enemies in place, or to turn fey and fiends. At later levels, they gain a powerful aura to reduce all spell damage by half, and eventually gain the ability to come back from 0 hp. Play-style: You like the idea of playing to an oath that is above society and people.
You like the nature loving side of druids, but want to use weapons and armor with a only a dash of magical spells. Advertisements Batman — DC Comics Oath of Vengeance PHB Theme: Perseverant and persistent, the paladin of vengeance will tear down any obstacle to find justice, punishing those that have wronged them or others. Game Mechanics: Central abilities focus on frightening and reducing enemies ability to move, or enhance your ability to catch up to opponents. At higher levels, this paladin can move with opportunity attacks and, at their highest level, are able to fly. Play-style: You want to play the unstoppable force that is determined to get their objective. Whether it be by enhancing your abilities or preventing the opponent, your focus is always on closing the gap between you and the goal. Judge Dredd — Dredd Oath of the Crown SCAG Theme: Sworn to maintaining law and sense of order, the crown paladin is determined to find the most diplomatic way for everyone to get along and, if they cannot, to quell those that foster sedition. In the most dire circumstances, this paladin will sacrifice themselves for the good of others.
Game Mechanics: Possibly the most tank-like Paladin, this class has the ability to prevent enemies from moving away from them, healing their allies, and taking damage that would otherwise hurt their friends. At later levels, they have an advantage to being paralyze or stunned, and gain a significant amount of saving throw advantages at their highest level. Play-style: You like to play someone who can lead: someone who will seek the truth and room for peace between people.
At level 3 and further, levels should be put in Warlock, taking melee option abilities as you level. Warlocks regain all spell slots during a short rest. The strategy: As often as possible, utilize Divine Smite on hits to increase melee power - which can be then replenished during a short rest. The weakness: Although few monsters are resistant to radiant, this build focuses on radiant damage. Explore alternative damage sources for backup. This build is mainly suited for single target damage, facing multiple enemies can pose a problem.
D&D 5E Basic Build Series: Paladin
Otherwise, leave it alone. Dragonborn two-hander tank A classic build that offers all the Paladin quirks in a simple but effective package. Become the tank of your party, soaking up hits, protecting squishier companions, and taking the Oath of the Crown to gain a generous slew of party buffs and defensive abilities. Ability scores A two-handed martial fighter, your character will need all the Str they can get. Follow it up with a high Cha to leverage your defensive spells, and rely on Lay on Hands to bolster your HP pool, rather than sacrificing Str or Cha for a high Con score. Access to their Breath Weapon will serve some use for crowd control, and damage resistance dependent upon your chosen Draconic Ancestry can kickstart your tanking career.
Take a Greatsword. Unsurprisingly, Great Weapon Fighting should be your pick of fighting style, ensuring any damage dealt is bumped up high. Or opt for Turn of the Tide, if party healing has become your responsibility. At level four, split your ability score improvement between Str and Cha, as both will still be essential. Build accordingly.
Or, consider picking the Sentinel Feat, to improve your opportunity and reaction attacks. Aasimar redeemer For times when a Cleric is nowhere to be found, and your party tends to come away from fights looking more like a band of broken stragglers than heroic adventurers, check out this build. Paladin defenders built around the Oath of Redemption specialize less in direct restorative abilities, and more in redirecting damage to themselves, or avoiding fighting altogether. A highly effective class, but also a stressful one, as you see your HP will bob up and down dramatically mid-fight. For weapons, take a battleaxe and shield.
Tank First on my list is the Tank.
She forgoes armor in favor of the leather armor worn by the militia of Kreston. She spent years searching for the perpetrators and avenging her family and village, but she never found them. Now she is searching for a new place to call home and have a chance to rebuild her life. He was like a lion or tiger, and he had a fearless sense of adventure. When he was old and frail, he taught his daughter everything he knew about fighting and hunting, hoping she would continue the family legacy after he passed away. She chose a different path, however, joining the clerics in Yorebridge. Zaela trained under the Lord Marshall of the Grabisco Army.
She learned at an early age that her people halflings were not as popular as humans or elves. She trained hard and became a powerful cleric-warrior, and was the only halfling to become a Lord Marshall. Zaela eventually took over the role as leader of the clerics in Yorebridge and the surrounding area. With the attack by the dragon, Gulo, Zaela has been called upon once again to protect her people. The Green Dragon Gulo was born many years ago. With a head as big as a horse, and a huge wingspan, he was the biggest dragon in the land. He was very cunning and powerful.
People feared him. He liked to drink the blood of humans and halflings, and enjoyed destroying small farms and villages in the countryside. He was not above eating a dog or chicken, either. His size was intimidating, and he was tough to defeat! The elves were the first to come up with a plan to defeat the dragon Gulo. They called on a group of human warriors called the Red Dragons. Zaela, serving as a Lord Marshall, led the army into battle with Gulo.
That battle was the bloodiest and most difficult battle Zaela had ever been involved in. Gulo had been ready for them, however. The attack lasted for days with both sides watching their comrades fall by their side. However, at last the leaders of the Red Dragon forces thought they had figured out a plan that would work. They used a magic potion that could make them invisible, but this meant they would not be able to see each other or Gulo in order for it to work. That was accomplished by using ropes. As they prepared their attack, two leaders of the Red Dragons covered themselves with shields painted with pictures to see each other by reflection.
If we look to the intersection between Green and White we will find ideals such as the upholding of life and tradition to be shared. White will do what it can to stand against darkness and to defend that which cannot defend itself, while Green wishes to see things grow and appreciates the beauty found in all things. This ancient oath is one which has been upheld by paladins for as far back as the first elves. The Fey or Green Knight has always stood for the land and its people and because of this tradition is a strong feature in this version of the paladin. Once again going back to our colors we we know that tradition and the upholding of the old way are common among both of these colors. Feel free to allow your character to be positive, happy and to bring out the best in others over themselves. For our final rendition I want to do something drastic and shed both of these colors and bring in Black, because yes White is important to the paladin and its oath but what happens when that oath is broken? BLACK One can devote their life to something bigger than them only to become jaded by what it stands for. A just hand can see that their actions have little meaning and turn against who they once were for a path more in line with the cruel realities of the world around them.
In the case of our character they fought for many years to be that hand of justice, striking down what they viewed as the evils of society, only to turn their back on what they found, as to them it was a foolish endeavor. This darkness built up inside of them until it changed them forever. On one such a mission, after purging a village which had grown infected by the undead they no longer believed in their mission and fell into darkness. Casting off their oath and last bit of humanity. I think a character like this can be tricky to play as it requires utilizing accumulated trauma as a mechanism for your characters decisions, but if you are up for the challenge then there is some amazing role-playing moments you can conjure up. In a rare case for our supplementary character designs I went with a mono color and one that opposes our core color. This choice was very deliberate. With White being a color of collective responsibility and justice, while Black is instead the color of individualism and moral relativism. Where White places its purpose into the hands of a higher ideal, Black places its purpose solely with itself and its own desires.
So in this way they shed their oath which bound them to a higher ideal, an ideal they found to be a lie and in this way cast their trust completely into their own hands. Now of course the rejection came with a steep price, they now push back fully against everything that their previous oath stood for and have become something of a villain themselves. CONCLUSION Now that we have built a few characters lets discuss each of the colors and how they can be used in relation to the paladin, that way you can mix and match to create your own. Ah yes that thing I told you to abandon in place of the color pie, well it does have its uses and I think I can illustrate something by doing so. At the heart of every Paladin is the core alignment of Lawful, something you could hardly escape, because in many ways an oath is a law you have set to be the focus of your life.
Paladin Handbook: DnD 5th Edition Class Guide – RPGBOT
Controlling undead creatures can be cool, but unless your campaign features a lot of them, this subclass is ultimately one of the weaker ones. Conquest XGtE. Armor of Agathys and Command spells and the ability to frighten creatures in a large area with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. This subclass is all about controlling big crowds of enemies. All four low-level spells that Conquest Paladins get are great and useful to have prepared at all times. Redemption XGtE. Sanctuary and Sleep spells and the ability to either boost your Persuasion checks or use a reaction to deal mirrored damage at an enemy attacker with Channel Divinity at the 3rd level. Calm Emotions and Hold Person spells at 5th level and an aura that transfers damage taken by an ally to you instead at 7th level. Sleep and Hold Person are good spells, and the ability to have both a useful out-of-combat Channel Divinity is nice, even if the rebuke power is ultimately more powerful when used in the right situation. Glory TCoE.
Guiding Bolt and Heroism spells at 5th level and the ability to gain advantage on Athletics and Acrobatics checks or grant temporary hit points to allies after using Divine Smite with Channel Divinity at 3rd level. Enhance Ability and Magic Weapon spells and an aura that increases the movement speed of nearby allies at 7th level. Enhance Ability furthers this even further. Heroism and the Inspiring Smite facet of Channel Divinity both help solidify this subclass as a wonderful support as well. Watchers TCoE. Alarm and Detect Magic spells and the ability to grant advantage on mental saving throws with their Channel Divinity at 3rd-level. Moonbeam and See Invisibility spells at 5th level and an aura that boosts initiative at 7th level. Watchers are dedicated to not being caught off guard, as their extra spells and class features show. Advantage on mental saving throws Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma for a full minute is quite strong, but the extra spells they get are a bit weak. Crown SCAG.
Command and Compelled Duel spells and the ability to prevent enemies from moving away or heal allies with Channel Divinity at 3rd-level. Warding Bond and Zone of Truth spells at 5th level and the ability to transfer damage taken by an ally within 5 feet at 7th level. However, they sadly miss out on a subclass aura. What Race Is Best for Paladin in 5e? The best race for a Paladin is one that comes with a Charisma bonus and useful racial traits for the Paladin playstyle. Boosts to Strength are also welcome.
This is the subclass for the Paladin. Ability Score Improvement GameCows Ranking: 2 Like most of the other classes, Paladins get 2 points to add to any of their ability scores max 20. This happens at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19th level. Level: 18 — The range increases to 30ft. Aura of Courage Level: 10 — The Paladin and any creature within 10ft cannot be frightened. Level: 18 — The range increases to 30 ft. Improved Divine Smite GameCows Ranking: 1 Level: 11 — Whenever the Paladin hits a creature with a melee attack an extra 1d8 is automatically added to the damage without expending a spell slot. The Paladin can still choose to expend a spell slot to add more radiant damage. If they choose to do so the numbers are simply added together.
Informational discussions and presentations that explore the powerful options available to players and DMs. This build requires a minimum Paladin level of 2, and the first level should be taken in Paladin. This character is primarily considered a melee character to utilize the strength-based abilities of the Paladin including smite and heavy armor. Charisma is a highly favored ability score, since both Paladin and Warlock spells and abilities use this score. Constitution, as usual, is extremely important for survival. At level 3 and further, levels should be put in Warlock, taking melee option abilities as you level.
Руководство по 5-ой редакции Dungeons & Dragons для начинающих: Часть 4, Классы.
Divine Health By 3rd level, the divine magic flowing through you makes you immune to disease. Sacred Oath When you reach 3rd level, you swear the oath that binds you as a paladin forever. Up to this time you have been in a preparatory stage, committed to the path but not yet sworn to it. Now you choose an oath, such as the Oath of Devotion. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level. Those features include oath spells and the Channel Divinity feature.
Oath Spells Each oath has a list of associated spells. You gain access to these spells at the levels specified in the oath description. Once you gain access to an oath spell, you always have it prepared. Channel Divinity Your oath allows you to channel divine energy to fuel magical effects. Each Channel Divinity option provided by your oath explains how to use it.
When you use your Channel Divinity, you choose which option to use. You must then finish a short or long rest to use your Channel Divinity again. Some Channel Divinity effects require saving throws. When you use such an effect from this class, the DC equals your paladin spell save DC. Ability Score Improvement When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1.
Extra Attack Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. You must be conscious to grant this bonus. At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.
Paladins no longer have cantrips as in previous playtests. Instead, they receive the Weapon Mastery feature. Lay on Hands is now a Bonus Action, meaning players can use it alongside attacking, healing, using a spell, or any other move that requires an Action. Aura of Protection has returned to 6th-level and will now become inactive if the Paladin is incapacitated. Adjure Foes will now do nothing on a successful save. Aura of Courage has returned to being a 10th-level feature.
Radiant Strikes now work on both melee weapons and Unarmed Strikes. Restoring Touch has been moved to a 14th-level class feature.
Make sure you take proficiency in Perception if you can manage it without sacrificbing a Face skill. Nothing fancy, but very effective. Lightly-armored paladins might still prefer a Broom of Flying. Fire and poison are safe choices. Imagine rushing to get to 20 Strength then finding an item that raises your Strength to 21 more with higher rarities. Still, if you can get one you absolutely should. Taking damage from any source spells, etc.
You can notably cast every spell from the beads as a Bonus Action yes, including Planar Ally which normally has a 10-minute casting time , allowing you to quickly heal allies or get Bless running while leaving your Action for attacks or cantrips. Periapt of Proof Against Poison DMG : Poison damage is very common across the full level range, so immunity to it is a significant improvement in your durability. Ring of Spell Storing DMG : Fill it with Absorb Elements and Shield and recharge it whenever possible and this is a spectacular defensive asset on almost any character. Radiant damage is great, but most creatures with resistance to weapon damage types are affected normally by magic weapons so the benefits of radiant damage compared to piercing or slashing damage from a magical we oapon are minor. Animated Shield DMG : Tempting for anyone not fighting with a one-handed weapon, but a Cloak of Protection is two rarities lower, works persistently, and arguably provides a better numeric bonus. If you plan to get full plate, get Dwarven Plate instead. For a Strength-based character, raising your Strength above 20 is a massive benefit, and going up as high as 25 is spectacular. Invoking the rune on Bloodshed Blade lets you perform a once-per-day nuke which should nicely eliminate whatever thing to drop all of your hit dice on top of. Yes, you get resistance to fire damage, but you can get that from dozens of other sources by this level.
Scimitar of Speed DMG : Among the best weapons to use with the Dueling style, you get two-weapon fighting action economy on a single weapon. Increasing your Strength or Dexterity may be more important, but if you can get both you absolutely should. At high enough level that you might have this item there will definitely be enemies with access to magic attacks spellcasters, magic weapons, natural weapons which count as magical, etc. It feels underwhelming at this rarity, but the math is good. Note that this is just the invisible condition, not the spell have Invisibility, so you can still attack or whatever while invisible. Otherwise, this is a really fun item, and if it provided Advantage on saves against area of effect spells it would shoot straight up to blue.
As written this is incredible because the re-roll will apply to Divine Smite damage. Protection: Another good style for you shield users.
Uses your reaction to impose disadvantage, if your party looks to you for protection this fits that role. Worthwhile if you see yourself climbing rigging and swimming in the oceans. Like Druids this gives them amazing day-to-day versatility. A holy symbol is required as a focus, which can be worn as an amulet or embossed on your shield. Divine Smite: The cornerstone of your burst damage ability. This one can especially become devastating on a critical hit, in which case the damage dice from this are doubled. Another key thing to remember about this is that it uses no action whatsoever, which means you can use it multiple times per round if you have additional attacks, can use it on the same turn you cast a bonus action spell including stacking this on top of a smite spell! NOTE: The 5d8 cap means the maximum damage from this uses a 4th-level spell slot, so you get no benefit from blowing a 5th-level slot.
This may need to be errata-ed to a 6d8 cap. Divine Health 3rd Level : Immune to disease. Great when it comes up. The archetype you choose grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level. Only the Fighter gets more of these. Max out your primary stats and then take a some feats. Aura of Protection 6th Level : Arguably the signature of the Paladin class, where you add your CHA modifier to all of your saving throws. And if allies are within 10 feet, they get that benefit, too.
Aura of Courage 10th Level : Frightened can be quite nasty for a melee combatant, which you are, because it not only invokes disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks, but it also prevents you from moving towards the source of the frightening. Improved Divine Smite 11th Level : Bonus radiant damage every time you hit at no cost. Cleansing Touch 14th Level : Negate a hostile spell on yourself or an ally with your action, with CHA-mod uses per day. Pretty neat ability, if not quite a flat-out game changer. Aura Improvements 18th Level : All those lovely Auras you get Protection, Courage, anything from your Oath expand from 10 feet to 30 feet. Strength is the best for a two-handed attacker, both are viable for dual wielding and sword-and-board fighting styles. Dex: Dexterity is obviously preferable for finese weapons. Con: Another top tier stat.
Hit points are just too important to let slide. Paladins are melee combatants, and more hit points lets them stay in combat for longer and recover more HP with hit dice. If you plan on casting Concentration spells in the middle of combat, you want a decent score here to maintain them when taking damage. It helps that the Paladin is proficient in Wisdom saves. Boost Charisma instead and let Aura of Protection take care of the rest. Defensive bonuses are also useful early though some options may be less effective later. Enlarge gives you advantage on STR checks and saves, plus an extra d4 damage on each attack. They get Darkvision, advantage against charm and immunity to sleep.
Boosted darkvision and Faerie Fire can help in an ongoing underground campaign, and the sunlight sensitivity hurts if you go outside. Maybe you can wear a big fancy hat like Jarlaxxle. The new Fey Step also has a side effect depending on what season you are, which you can change any day you want. Note that Winter is a frightening effect and is thus valuable for Conquest. Using a bonus action you can do a short range teleport that gives you resistance to all damage. A solid defensive option. Relying on at least 3 stats makes this a decent idea but not an incredible one. Get a head start on your character concept with a feat!
The small size but without the benefits of Lucky or the Dex Bonus. Many Paladins will want to consider this, there are even more sub-race options on Half-Elf now similar to the Elf subraces. Perception is a solid choice in any campaign and the other one is up to you. All the positives with none of the downsides. Good deal. Thematically a Fiend Paladin who is resistant to fire like a Blackguard just sounds badass. The Variant Tieflings are a mixed bag.. Hellish Rebuke and Darkness give you some ranged options and utility.
Charm person and Entrall based on your Charisma spellcasting modifier are also solid options if used correctly. Hellfire : Replacing the hellish rebuke with burning hands helps your ability to handle some hordes, not a huge change though. Winged: Instead of extra spells you get to fly around when not wearing heavy armour. Darkvision, resistance to necrotic and radiant damage, free Light cantrip and a long-rest recharge, scaled-back version of Lay on Hands that means you can conserve some of your actual Lay on Hands. The rest of the abilities are a bit hap-hazard for a Paladin. A big strong Goliath is similar to a Half-Orc where you get Athletics for free instead of Intimidation. Tabaxi get Darkvision, extra movement, built in weapons, and free proficiency in Stealth and Perception. The Cha boost helps a bit too.
