You were once going to take the role of editor-in-chief at Milestone. Does that sort of leadership role, either as an editor or someone supervising a line of comics, still interest you? Well, yes and no. I think the conditions would have to be right.
Having to relocate gets complicated in terms of finances and so forth. Joe Illidge is the editor-in-chief of Lion Forge [Ed. A lot of these places want you to be on site, and I would have to go there. With Milestone there were some differences between the partners when we were developing the Milestone brand.
Initially, that was going to be my role; I was going to be in the Dwayne McDuffie role. At the last minute the compromise we came to is that I would be the in-house liaison at DC Comics and Dwayne stepped into that role, kind of reluctantly. He did it because he was the only guy really qualified. He knew all of these characters, he co-created all of these characters, and he was the smartest guy in any room he happened to be standing in.
Dwayne was a great guy. He did not have the kind of ambition where he wanted his name above the title. I stepped away from Milestone because I thought it was more important that Milestone exist than I be a part of it. For me to stay there and be in a contentious relationship with some of the partners, I had the sense that could undermine the whole deal if DC got a whiff of it.
Ironically, Dwayne did the opposite where he moved closer because he needed to fill the vacuum. When you look at the future of the industry, do you feel optimistic or pessimistic? The bottom end of the industry feeds into this chokehold of a distribution system.
The other thing to remember with a Christopher Priest novel is that the author often approaches the plot obliquely. Things are never approached head-on. Instead, the story builds by showing the reader elements that first seem relatively unrelated or barely related to what we think is the main story. Like the reader, he finds himself intrigued by the mystery — Where did she go?
Was she really dead? Who was the mysterious man who sat beside her on the flight across from New York? They are interesting on their own, and at times their choice is inspired. It seems that Farmer is destined to be in a place between airside and landside indefinitely until he manages to escape. Airside is really about dealing with the place and those situations that people find themselves in at airports — times of stress with intense and rapid transit separated by periods of queuing and waiting. In landside we check to see if the flight is on time, or when it is likely to board. If we are arriving from a flight, landside is where we are able to pick up our luggage. Coming in we are anxious to get home. On an outward journey we hasten towards: Airside. This is where we have to be electronically scanned, have our bags X-rayed, our laptop looked at, where we put keys and loose change in a tray, where sometimes we have to remove our belt, or transfer little tubes and bottles of harmless unguents into a plastic bag. We cannot proceed through airside without a boarding pass in hand, or a passport. Closed-circuit cameras are everywhere, and some of them are checking our faces against a database. There is a sense that at any time, for any random reason, we might be challenged by someone in a uniform. Once through all that we experience the unique nullity of airside.
So I got a call from DC, and they wanted to talk to me about Cyborg. I gave them the standard stump speech. I used to be a guy who would write Spider-Man, Deadpool, and Batman. Why am I no longer qualified to write those characters? How did I get typecast from writing Black Panther of all things, when that series was never really about Black Panther. It was about the white guy, about Ross. It was narrated through his voice, and I thought I wrote a very well-constructed white character. Why are you now pigeonholing me as a guy who can only write black characters? I later found out that Marvel and, to a lesser extent, DC moved into a trend where they were no longer hiring writers—they were casting writers. A writer writes.
Tom Clancy, rest his soul, could write anything. I was really polite about it and told DC thank you for calling, blah, blah, blah. Then a day or two later I got another call from DC, and they asked me about Deathstroke. I left comics because they stopped offering me anything but black characters. Now, ironically, both Marvel and DC and some of the independents, are talking about a whole range of things. Do you think most other writers of color in comics are still facing that same problem? I would imagine so. I really felt that for many years when people picked up the phone to call me the first thing they thought was "black," and my suspicions were confirmed. I resented that. I can write anything.
A lot of my co-creators of color and female writers can write anything.
Priest Yeah, the first arc is basically setting up the new status quo, and it will operate on two different levels. One is present day, and one is approximately ten years ago, more or less. So we will see the evolution of his children --- Grant, Joseph and Rose --- and learn their story and in so doing we kind of see Slade Wilson progress from an anti-hero and soldier in the military, and kind of a Captain America type figure in some aspects, how he goes from that to being this villain. Pagulayan: I really like the way Chris is writing the parallel story progression.
Will we see more of cameos from DC heroes and villains in future issues? A character like Deathstroke, we kind of have to have the gang from the DC Universe popping in every now and then. He does bad things not only to superheroes, but he does bad things to his family. CA: How closely are you working as a team, both together and with the other artists on the run? Did you have any input on the design process?

Even though things are tough, the secretive directorate that rules the city keeps the inhabitants in the dark. They have all been raised on synthetic food, common creches and sheltered from the challenges that have become part of human existence. But in recent times, the citizens have been growing resistive and the city is in crisis.
Despite all their efforts the city has been slipping behind the optimum. He had lost his job and his flat, had a tempestuous breakup and lost his father. As such he thought nothing of leaving London to go live in a ramshackle cottage that was a great friend of his deceased father.
He planned to live there temporarily and instead of paying rent he would decorate and maintain the home for free. However, once he arrives at the cottage he develops an obsession with journaling the story of his life. Initially, he tries to pen a straightforward memoir but he cannot make head or tails of anything.
Ultimately, he realizes that it is only through falsehood that deeper truths can be revealed.
